Brianna Felted Tote

Knit and felt a striped tote with our free knitting pattern! You'll enjoy knitting this pretty tote to accent your spring wardrobe. Or create one for any outfit that needs the right touch of bohemian style. This would also make a lovely homemade gift for any occasion, such as birthdays or showers. Combine dark earthy tones for a fall look, or pastel tones for a lighter spring appeal.

Skill level: Intermediate

Materials:  190 yards of three different colors of worsted weight wool –( the sample was knit using Lamb’s pride worsted in sable – color 1, Turkish olive- color 2, and clematis – color 3) * Make sure you choose a wool that is NOT superwash wool. Choose one that will felt well.
Size 10 ½  24 inch circular needle

Gauge:  3 stitches to the inch before felting.

Tote Base
Cast on 18.
Rows 1 - 58 : K in each stitch across.
Round 59: Do not turn your work, pick up and knit 29 stitch along the left side of rectangle, pick up and knit 18 stitches along the bottom of the rectangle, pick up and knit 29 stitches along the right side of rectangle, place a maker to mark beginning of round. (94)
Rounds 60 – 65: K in each stitch around.
Round 66: With color 2 (green) K in each stitch around.
Round 67: P in each stitch around.
Round 68 – 71: With color 1, K in each stitch around.
Rounds 72- 75: With color 2, K in each stitch around.
Round 76:  With color 1, K in each stitch around.
Round 77: P in each stitch around.
Rounds 78- 82: With color 2, K in each stitch around.
Rounds 83- 88: With color 3, K in each stitch around.
Round 89: With color 2, K in each stitch around.
Round 90: P in each stitch around.
Rounds 91- 96: With color 3, K in each stitch around.
Round 97: With color 1, K in each stitch around.
Round 98: P in each stitch around.
Rounds 99 – 104: With color 3, K in each stitch around.
Rounds 105-108: With color 2, K in each stitch around.
Round 109: With color 3, K in each stitch around.
Round 110: P in each stitch around.

Break yarn and place 17 stitches on to a holder. Join yarn at the other side and repeat for side.
Break yarn at end of row 16, but don’t place on holder.

Strap
Rows 1 – 20: With color 3, K in each stitch across.
Rows 21 -40: With colors 2, K in each stitch across.
Rows 41-60: With color 1, K in each stitch across.
Repeat rows 1- 60 two more times. Then repeat rows 1 -40 one more time.

Finishing is all up.
•    Graft the end of strap to the other end of the side. Be careful to not twist the strap.
•    Weave in all ends.
•    Place tote into a pillow case and secure closed.
•    Place in washing machine with some old jeans or towels and wash in hot water. Check every few minutes to see if the tote is felted enough for your liking.
•    Lay flat to dry making sure there are no creases anywhere on the tote.
•    Once it’s dry you may line it if you wish.
