Step 1: Getting Started

Do you have a beloved sweater that is too worn to wear anymore? Why not create something new from your sweater - DIY sweater mittens? Use your old sweater to create new mittens and enjoy your favorite sweater a little while longer. This thrifty nifty DIY could also make a few pair of mittens for smaller hands from one sweater. Go dig out those old Christmas sweaters and get to work! Or visit your local thrift store and pickup some fun sweaters that need a new home.

Materials:

Sweater
Scissors
Mitten Template
Sewing Machine or
Needle and Thread

Step 2: Craft Tutorial

Instructions:

Step 1: Turn your sweater inside out and place your hands or mittens template on the hemline of your sweater. Using the hemline for your mittens makes the sewing easier because the bottom already has a pretty finished hem.

Step 2: Mark off the area that you want to sew with chalk or a marker. You can also use a pair of mittens for a template and trace around if you need. Just keep in mind, it's better to make it a little bit too big because you can always take it in later. So measure twice and cut once!

Step 3: Once your mittens are cut- do a quick stitch around your mittens using your sewing machine. I would note that the chunkier your fabric- the bigger you will want your stitch when sewing with knits.

Once it is sewn- turn it inside out and it's done!
