Step 1: Getting Started
Need an accent piece to add to your Spring wardrobe? Create a pretty knit shawl with lace trim and geometric details to keep your neck and shoulders warm on chilly Spring mornings or for a walk at sunset. Mix and match colors in many combinations or knit a solid colored shawl using our free pattern.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Materials:
150 yards each of lace weight yarn in three different colors. (The sample was knit using handspun Shetland in cream, grey and black or 450 yards of a solid color.
24 inch size 7 needle
Stitch markers
Yarn needle
Finished size:
Gauge: Gauge is not super important for this project. You do want a light and airy fabric so if needed adjust your needle size to get a fabric you like.
Stitches used:
K= knit
P= purl
Sts= stitches
K2tog= knit two stitch together
Pm= place marker
Sm = slip marker
YO= yarn over
Inc= knit into the front and the back of the stitch, increase made
Sl = slip stitch
Psso= pass slipped stitch over
Step 2: Pattern Instructions
Pattern Instructions:
Shawl
Border set up: Cast on 4 stitches with cream color.
Row 1-6: knit
Row 7: Turn piece and pick up and knit 3 sts into the garter stitch bumps along the side, pick up and knit 4 sts on cast on. (11)
Row 8: K 4, Pm, P 3, Pm, K4.
Body of shawl:
Row 1: K4, Sm, YO, K1,YO, K1, Yo, k1, Yo, Sm, K 4.
Row 2: K 4, Sm, P across to next marker, Sm, K 4.
Row 3: K 4, Sm, Yo, inc in next 6 sts, K1, YO, Sm, K 4.
Row 4 and all even rows: K 4, Sm, P to last marker, Sm K4,slipping all markers as you come to them.
Row 5: K 4, S, Yo, K 4,inc, pm, inc, K 3 inc, pm, inc, K4, YO, Sm, K 4.
Row 7: K 4, Sm, Yo,( knit across to 1 st before next marker, inc, Sm, inc) repeat one more time; K to next marker, YO, Sm, K 4.
Repeat rows 7 and 8 until you have 113sts on the needle ending with row 4.
Change to color grey and repeat row 7 and 4 once.
Change back to cream and repeat rows 7 and 8, three times.
Change to light grey and repeat rows 7 and 8 ten times.
Change to black, and repeat rows 7 and 8.
Change back to light grey and repeat 7 and 8 three times.
Change back to black and repeat rows 7 and 8 times.
You now have a total of 251 sts on the needle.
Step 3: Finishing Up
Lace border:
Row 1: K 2, K2tog, (K3, Yo, K1, Yo, K3, sl 1, k2tog, psso) repeat across to last, 6 sts, K3, Yo, K to end.
Row 2: K 2, P across to last 2 Sts, K 2.
Repeat rows 1 and 2, 5 more times.
Cast off loosely.
