Finding just the right cases to personalize your back to school supplies can be a challenge sometimes. Why not create your own cases, covers and cozies to hold all the essentials for back to school or just to hold goodies in your tote, backpack or purse.

Our zipper pencil case is a great knitting project for beginning knitters or more intermediate knitters wanting to work on something quick and easy. Knit a fun pencil case in any color, in just about any worsted weight yarn you can find.

Skill level: Beginner

Materials:  Small amount of worsted weight yarn.  Approx.  50 yards of main color and a little bit  other colors for flowers,

Size 7 needles


9 in zipper to match main color

Sewing threads and needle or sewing machine

Yarn needle

Gauge: 4 sts per inch



Case (make 2)

With main color cast on 30 sts.

Row 1-3: K in each stitch across

Row 4: P in each stitch across.

Repeat row 1 and 4 until piece measures 5 inches.

Cast off and weave in ends.


Putting it all together

Step 1: Using pictures for placement  add buttons and flowers to one or both sides of the case.

Step 2: Sew tops of each piece to zipper.

Step 3: Open the Zipper and turn case inside out and sew along the 3 remaining sides. Clip ends.

She has taught classes through various yarn stores, Community Education Programs, fiber fairs; as well as in 4-H programs around Idaho. She has been designing her own unique projects and patterns for numerous year and she has spent several years as a pattern tester for many yarn and design companies.
