Step 1: Getting Started

 

Whether you are watching Babe Ruth Baseball from the bleachers or viewing the World Series from your sofa – this “Play Ball” afghan is just the ticket to keep you warm and cozy and enjoying the game! Using our free crochet pattern and your choice of team colors (or other fun color combinations) you will be crocheting and finish this easy afghan in no time at all.

The granny stitch theme creates the perfect blend of comfort and versatility so you can use this afghan just about anywhere, from bonfires to camp fires!

Skill level: advanced beginner

Materials

14 ounces in 4 different colors of worsted weight yarn. The sample was crocheted with Red Heart with love in Navy (color 1), Grey (color 2), Mallard (color 3),  and White( Color 4),

Size J hook

Gauge: 25 sts  = 6 inches.

Stitches used:

Ch- chain

Sc- single crochet

Dc- double crochet

Sps- the space between one 3 dc group and another 3 dc group

Step 2: Pattern Instructions

 

Blanket Instructions:

Ch 163 using Navy or color 1.

Row 1: Skip first ch from hook. Sc in each ch across ch 2, turn.

Row 2: Sk first 3 sc, ( 3 dc in next sc, sk next 2 sc) 3 times; in next sc work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc); *( sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in next sc) 2 times; Sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in next sc; sk next 4 sc, 3 dc in next sc; ( sk next 2 sc, 3 dc in next sc) two times; sk next 2 sc, in next sc work ( 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc) repeat from * to last 12 sc; sk next 2 sc, ( 3 dc in next sc, sk next 2 sc) 3 times; dc in last sc, Ch 2 , turn.

Row 3: Sk first 4 sts, 3 dc in each of next 3 sps; in next  ch 3 sp work ( 3 dc, ch 3 3 dc); *3 dc in each  od next 3 sps, sk next sps; 3 dc in next 3 sps, in next ch-3 sp work (3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc); repeat  from * to last 4 sps; 3 dc in each of next 3 sps; dc in last sp, ch 2, turn.

Repeat row 3 in following color sequence 6 times.

Color  1 – three row  3’s

Color  2- three row 3’s

Color 3- three row 3’s

Color  4- Three row 3’s

End with  3 rows of color 1. Break yarn and weave in all ends.

 

Edging -

Starting at the bottom right using color 1 join yarn and sc in corner sc.  Next 3sc in each ch 3 along side of afghan to corner at the top of afghan.  3 sc in corner dc. Sc in each st across to, 3 sc in corner, 3 sc in each ch 3 on side of afghan to bottom. Break yarn and weave in ends.

She has taught classes through various yarn stores, Community Education Programs, fiber fairs; as well as in 4-H programs around Idaho. She has been designing her own unique projects and patterns for numerous year and she has spent several years as a pattern tester for many yarn and design companies.
