Materials: Crochet hook H, 4 ounces of Caron Simply Soft yarn
Notes: The red hat pictured in the photos was made using a size H hook and fits a child's head with a bit of room. The blue hat was made using a size I hook and will fit a teen or adult head snugly. The larger hook creates a larger hat.
Pattern Instructions:
On this pattern you will join the rows, then make a ch 1 loosely, whereas on most patterns you would do a ch 3 to counts as a dc. The ch 1 works better and it makes a much neater stitch line. So do NOT think this ch 1 idea is a typo! J
Row 1: With color of choice, ch 3 loosely and place 12 dc into the 3rd ch from your hook. Join with a slip st to the 1st dc to join, ignoring the start ch(s) now and throughout. Ch 1 loosely & turn. (12 dc in row)
Row 2: place 2 dc into each dc. Sl st into the 1st dc to join, ch 1, and turn. (24 dc)
Row 3: place 2 dc into the same dc, dc in the next dc, *2 dc in the next dc, dc in the next dc, repeating from * around. Sl st into the 1st dc to join, ch 1 loosely, and turn. (36 dc)
Step 2: Finishing Up
Row 4: dc in same and next dc, 2 dc in the next dc, *dc in ea of the next 2 dc, 2 dc in the next dc, repeating from * around. Sl st into the 1st dc to join, ch 1, and turn. (48 dc)
Row 5: 2 dc in same, dc in ea of the next 3 dc, * 2 dc in the next dc, dc in ea of the next 3 dc, repeating from * around. Sl st into the 1st dc to join, ch 1 loosely, and turn. (60 dc)
Row 6: dc in same and next 3 dc, 2 dc in next dc, *dc in ea of the next 4 dc, 2 dc in next dc, repeating from * around. Sl st into the 1st dc to join, ch 1 loosely, and turn. (72 dc)
Row 7: 2 dc in same, dc in next 17 dc, *2 dc in next dc, dc in ea of the next 17 dc, repeating from * around.. Sl st into the 1st dc to join, ch 1 loosely, and turn. (76 dc)
Rows 8-14: dc in sane and ea dc around, ch 1 loosely, and turn. FINISH OFF (76 dc)
Row 15: Attach contrasting color with a sc in any dc, sc into each of the remaining 75 dc. Sl st into the 1st sc to join. DO NOT TURN
Row 16: Ch 3, place a dc into the sc to the right.* Skip the next sc to the right and place a dc in the next sc, place a dc into the skipped sc, repeating from the * around. Sl st into the 3rd ch of the beginning ch 3 to join. DO NOT TURN
Row 17: Ch 1, place sc in same and ea sc around. Sl st into 1st sc to join. DO NOT TURN
Row 18: Ch 1 & place a Reverse sc into ea sc around. Sl into 1st reverse sc and FINISH OFF.
