Step 1: Getting Started

Do your baby’s ears need to be kept warm and toasty this winter? Or maybe you need a simple and quick handmade gift for a baby shower or friend? Use our free knitting pattern to create a sweet knit baby hat for your little one or to share with someone special. This knitting project is great for beginners and may be made with one skein of yarn (a nice investment). Knit a hat in several different colors for baby boys or girls to match every winter outfit!

Difficulty: Easy

Materials: Size 8 Circular Knitting needles, 1 skein Sugar’n Cream yarn, tapestry needle for weaving in ends.

Measurements: 5 1/2 inches in height and 12 inch circumference.

Step 2: Pattern Instructions

Knitting Pattern:

Cast on 48 stitches

Row 1 Knit 2 Purl 4 all the way around. Place marker at the end of the row and connect the ends so you’re knitting in a circle. Be careful not to twist the stitches.
Row 2-6, repeat Knit 2 Purl 4 all the way around.
Knit around until hat reaches within one inch desired height.

I wanted my hat to be 5 and 1/2 inches tall so at 4 and 1/2 inches, I started adding decreases to my rows.

Decrease rows:
Decrease on the first row by adding a knit 2 together about every 6 stitches.

On the second decrease row, add a k2tog before and after the decrease stitch on the previous row so it makes a small triangle pattern. In Row 11, I start decreasing with a knit 2 together about every 6 stitches.

After 2 decrease rows, knit around and then add a couple more decreases in the 2 remaining rows. Once you tie up the end to create the top, the decrease stitches don’t show much anyway.

On the last row, cut the yarn, leaving about an 8 inch tail. Weave the tail through the stitches as you take them off the needle and draw tight to close the top of the hat. Tie it off and weave in the tail on the inside of the hat where it won’t show.
