Step 1: Getting Started

Has your favorite sweater seen better days, but you can’t bear to part with it? Why not turn it into an upcycled sweater beanie. Save your favorite sweater and give it new life as a fun, snuggly new hat. Have fun and get creative with this quick and easy tutorial to make a little cutie pie hat from sweaters.

It’s simple and inexpensive, and would also make some crazy cute gifts for Christmas. This is a fun and easy project that will keep little ones and grown-ups warm and cozy all winter! So don’t sweat having to abandon your favorite old sweater – just turn it into something new!

Difficulty: Easy

Sewing machine or
Needle and Thread
Embellishments (optional)

Step 2: Instructions

Step 1: Find a sweater in your closet or purchase one at a Thrift store if you are having trouble parting with any in your closet. Line up your hat with the bottom of the sweater- you will be using the bottom of the sweater as the brim of your hat-this saves you from having to hem your hat or finish it off in any way.

Step 2: Lay your sweater flat and inside out- measure a square of the exact measurements of your head- you will trace a rounded edge before cutting. You can also just outline a hat you have on hand that fits if that is easier. When you are ready to cut- make sure to cut through both layers of your sweater.

Step 3: After you have cut your hat you will sew a 1/4 inch seam around the edges, leaving the bottom open. Then make another seam right next to it (towards the outside) to reinforce the seam.  Turn it right side out and add some cut embellishments!
