 Tatting, a technique for handcrafting a particularly durable lace constructed by a series of knots and loops, can be a relaxing and rewarding hobby.  Delicate and beautiful, there is something rare and special about a tatted Christmas ornament.  Tatting can be used to make lace edging as well as doilies, collars, and other decorative pieces and accents.  This pretty Christmas bell ornament is made from five easy rows.

Difficulty: Easy to Intermediate

Materials: Size 20 thread, two shuttles, 1.3 mm crochet hook, and Ribbon of your choice.

 

# = Number of Double Stitches

R = Ring

SR = Split Ring

RND = Round

-   = Small Picot

--  = Medium Picot

---  = Large Picot

CL = Close Ring

+ = Attach

RW = Reverse Work

Instructions:

 RND 1:         

R1: 10-5-5-10 CL.

                        R2-5: 10+5-5-10 CL. (Attach to last – in Prev. R)

                        R6: 10+5-5+10 CL. (Attach to last – in prev. R and in 1st - in R1)

                        Finish RND by tying the ending stands of thread to beginning of work.

 

RND 2: Using Split Rings

                        SR1: 5+5/5-5 CL. (attach to – in Rnd 1)

                        SR2: 3-3/3-3 CL.

                        SR3-12: Rep SR1 and SR2.

                        Finish by + to 1st SR made, Tie off, hide string.

 

RND 3: Using Split Rings

                        SR1: 5+5/5-5 CL. (attach to – of Rnd 2 on a 3-3/3-3 R)

                        SR2: 3+3/3-3 CL. (attach to – of Rnd 2 on a 5+5/5-5 R)

                        SR3-12: Rep SR1 and SR2.

                        Finish by + to Beginning of SR1, tie off.

 

RND 4: Rep Rnd 3

 

RND 5:

Clover 1:         R1: 6-6 CL.

                        R2: 10+10 CL. (Attach to any – in RND 4 and every other – after that)

                        R3: 6-6 CL, RW.

 

                        CH: 10 - - 4 - - - 4 - - 10 RW.

 

Clover 2:         R1: 6+6 CL. (Attach to – in R3 of Prev clover.

                        R2: 10+10 CL. (Attach to any – in RND 4 and every other – after that)

                        R3: 6-6 CL, RW.

 

                        CH: 10 - - 4 - - - 4 - - 10 RW.

Clovers 3-5: Rep Clover 2 and CH.

                        Finish by + to beginning of 1st Clover made, Tie off.
