As autumn approaches and the days become colder, it's time to break out the winter wear. If you find yourself short on hats and long on yarn, try out our new warm and cozy hat. It's a great unisex knitting pattern that looks great in just about any color of yarn for any occasion requiring keeping your head warm outdoors. Make a few for the family or give some as homemade knitted gifts too.

Skill level: beginner

Materials: 140  yards of worsted weight yarn the sample was knit using 2 balls of SMC in the color rapture.
Size 9  16 inch needles
Size I crochet hook

Gauge:
 
Special notes:
•Always slip the first stitch as if to knit.
•Always purl the last stitch.
•Special stitch – Sl1F = Slip one stitch as if to purl with yarn in front

Pattern:
Cast on 84 stitches
Round 1: Join being careful not to twist stitches, Knit in each stitch around.
Round 2: K in each stitch around, slipping the marker as you come to it.
Repeat round 2 until piece measures 7 inches.

Top
Round 1:  (K 10. K2tog) repeat around. (77)
Round 2: K in each stitch around.
Round 3: (K 9, K2tog) repeat around. (70)
Round 4: Repeat round 2.
Round 5: (K 8, K2tog) repeat around. (63)
Round 6: Repeat round 2.
Round 7: (K7, K2tog) repeat around. (56)
Round 8: Repeat round 2.
Round 9: (K 6, K2tog) repeat around. (49)
Round 10: (K 5, K2tog) repeat around. (42)
Round 11: (K 4, Ktog) repeat around. (35)
Round 12: (K3, K2tog) repeat around. (27)
Round 13: (K2, K2tog) repeat around. (20)
Round 14: (K1, K2tog) repeat around. (13)
Round 15: K2tog 6 times, K 2. (8)
Place the first 4 stitches on to a holder.

Make a 5 inch Icord with the remaining 4 stitches. Cast off and weave in end.
Place the 4 stitch from holder back onto needles and make a 5 inch Icord. Cast off and weave in end.
Tie two Icords into a knot to close up top of hat.

Earflap 1
Holding hat upside down. Count 14 stitches from the left of the cast off. Pick up and knit the next 14 stitches, turn.
Row 1: Purl across
Row 2: Knit across
Row 3: Repeat row 1.
Row 4: K1, SSK, K to the last 3 stitches, K2tog, K1.
Repeat rows 1-4 one more time. (10)
Next row: P2tog, P to last 2 stitches, P2tog.
Cast off.

Earflap 2
Skip next 34 stitches on cast on edge. Pick up and knit the next 14 stitches and repeat as for first earflap.

Finishing it all up:
With crochet hook Single crochet evenly around hat and earflaps. Slip stitch into beginning single crochet. Reverse single crochet around hat. Cut yarn and weave in all ends and lightly block. You can  add a braid or tassel to each ear flap.
