"Tooth Fairy Angel" - Free Craft Project

Materials: 1/4 yd. (30 m) print fabric 44-45" (115 cm) wide; 8" x 20" (20.5 x 51 cm) piece of gingham; 4" x 10" (10 x 25.5 cm) muslin; 14" (35.5 cm) piece of extra wide double fold bias tape; 10" (25.5 cm) piece of 3/4" (2 cm) wide cotton fringe; 2" (5 cm) piece of 1/4" (6 mm) wide elastic; 4 oz. (115 g.) polyester stuffing; 8" x 9" (20.5 x 23 cm) rectangle of polyester batting; pink and white textile paint; fine-line black pen.

Note: All seams are 1/4" (6 mm).

Instruction: 

1. Cut: Make patterns of all design pieces. Transfer markings. Cut 2 bodies, 1 pocket, 4 sleeves and 1 head from print fabric. Cut 2 wings from gingham. From muslin cut 4 feet, 4 hands and 1 head. Trace markings. Also cut 1 wing from batting without seam allowance.

2. Wings: Stitch open edges of double fold seam tape. Fold in half and stitch ends of tape at marking with loop toward wing center. Place wing pieces right sides together and stitch, leaving lower edge open. Trim and clip seam. Turn right side out; press. Insert batting inside. Transfer machine quilting lines to wing with contrast   basting thread. Machine stitch along lines. Remove basting.

3. Pocket: Press under 1/8" (3 mm) on top edge. Fold over another 1/2" (1.3 cm) and press. Stitch to form a narrow casing. Insert elastic and shirr pocket to a width of 2" (5 cm). Bar-tack elastic ends as shown in sketch 1 on next page. Gather pocket along seam-line as shown on pattern. Press allowance under and stitch in place on fairy front.

4. Feet: Place pieces right sides together to yield a right and a left foot. Stitch around toes, leaving straight edges open. Trim. Clip corners. Turn, press and stuff.

5. Body: Pin feet on right side of body front at markings. Place body sections right sides together and stitch leaving an opening between dots on top body edge. Clip, turn and press; also press under 1/4" (6 mm) at opening.

6. Arms: With right sides together stitch hands to sleeves to form arms. With right sides together stitch around arms, leaving straight edges open. Trim and clip as needed. Turn and press. Stuff to within 1" (2.5 cm) of end.

7. Head: Baste fringe along broken lines on right side, keeping fringe toward head center. Place head sections right sides together and stitch, leaving an opening between dots. Clip seam and notch as needed. Turn and press. Stuff. Paint face features as shown in sketch 2 on next page.

8. Assemble: Layer head on top of arm so 1" (2.5 cm) of arm extends as shown in sketch 3 on next page. Edge-stitch through all layers to close head opening as shown in sketch 3. Press under open edges of second arm and insert 1" (2.5 cm) of wing tip into arm opening as shown in sketch 4. Stitch across. Place wing/arm unit against right side of body back , matching raw edges. Stitch. Pin front in position. Stitch from point across wing, leaving a 2" (5 cm) opening at body center as shown in sketch 5. Stuff firmly. Slipstitch opening closed. Sew head/arm unit in place on body.
