Uses- Bath mitt, dish cloth mitt, oven mitt, regular mittens )

Materials: Approx 3 ounces of any cotton, such a Lily or Peaches and Cream. Size G and size E crochet hooks. Tapestry needle to sew with.

Pattern:

Rnd 1: Use G hook and Loop yarn around index finger, pull up yarn through the loop and ch 1, place 6 sc into loop, then pull the tail tightly to close the loop. Sl st into the 1st sc to join. (6 sc)

Rnd 2: ch 1, place 2 sc in same and in ea remaining sc, around. Sl st into 1st sc to join. (12 sc)

Rnd 3-ch 1, place 2 sc in same and in ea remaining sc, around. Sl st into 1st sc to join. (24 sc)

Rnd 4: ch 1, place 2 sc in same and in ea of the next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st. (sc in ea of the next 3 sts, 2 sc in the next st) repeating around. (30 scs)

Rnd 5-22: ch 1, place a sc in same and in ea remaining 29 sts around. Sl st into 1st sc to join. (30 sc)

Rnd 23: Ch 6, skip the first 4 sts, place a sc in the in ea of the next 26 sts. Sl st into the first ch of the ch 6. Ch 1 and place a sc in same and in ea of the remaining 5 chs, then a sc into ea of the 26 scs. Sl st into the 1st sc to join. (32 sc)

Rnd 24-29: ch 1, sc in same and ea of the remaining 31 scs. Sl st into 1st sc to join. (32 sc)

Rnd 30: Begin working the cuff. Ch 6, place sc in 2nd ch from hook. Sc into the remaining 4 chs, *sl st into the next 3 sts on the mitten, then sc into the BACK LOOP ONLY of ea of the 5 sc on the cuff. Ch 1, sc into BLO of ea of the 5 sc on cuff, repeating from * to the last st on cuff and the base of the 1st st on the cuff. Turn and work a sc into ea of the 5 sts of the cuff, and leaving at least 8 inches of tail, cut thread. Sew cuff closed, using BLO of the ribbing on cuff, and the starting chains Free Loops. Finish off.

Work Thumb:

Rnd 1: Reattach cotton yarn into the first Free Loop of the beginning ch 6 on base of thumb. Ch 1, place a sc in same and in ea of the remaining 5 free loops, then sc into ea of the 4 previously skipped sts on the mitten. Sl st into the first sc to join. (10 sc)

Rnd 2-9: ch 1, place a sc into ea of the 10 scs around. Sl st into the 1st sc to join. (10 sc)

Rnd 10: ch 1, (work a sc decrease over the next 2 sts) 5 times. (5 scs)

Rnd 11: Cut cotton, leaving at least 8 inches of tail. Pull it through the final sc, thread tail onto tapesty needle and draw it through each of the 5 scs. Pull it tightly to close the hole and finish off.

**This pattern can be used as a bath mitt, a dish cloth mitt, or with a few changes as a hot pad mitt! To make it safer as a hot pad mitt, I recommend you work the pattern through Rnd 29, then set it aside. Work Rnds 1-29 again, but using a size H hook. Then slip the G worked mitt into the H worked mitten.

Making certain you crochet through BOTH Pieces, work the cuff in it's entirety. Then work the thumb, first through the loop on the G section, with the G hook, then with the H hook, finish working the thumb on the H section, tucking the G thumb through into the H worked thumb section. Being DOUBLE thickness it is excellent for use in removing super hot dishes from the oven.

Yes it can also be used to make a pair of mittens for winter, as well, though I recommend regular 4 ply worsted weight yarn, or DOUBLE Strand wool, which is BEST!
