Crochet Patterns - Baby Bunting and Cap

Materials: Red Heart 3-ply yarn in color of choice (6 -
2 ounce skeins.); Coats and Clark embroidery floss (6 strand), 1 skein each of
Mid. Rose, Beauty Pink, Dk. Yellow and Grass Green (or similar colors); small
floral pattern to embroider on bunting or free-hand embroider; 1 crochet hook
No. 4; 2 yards of satin ribbon, 1/4 inch wide in color of choice; 1 lightweight
zipper (18 inches long) color to match bunting.
Note: Embroidery is optional.
Gauge: 5 sts make 1"; 7 rows make 2 inches.
Bunting: Starting at bottom, make a chain 45 inches
long (5 ch sts to 1").
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in next ch, * dc in
next 2 ch, sc in next 2 ch. Repeat from * across, until row measures 35 inches,
ending with 2 dc. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sc in first 2 dc, * dc in next 2 sc, sc in
next 2 dc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, run. Repeat 2nd row until piece measures
27 inches. Break off. Attach yarn to end of first row at lower edge, sc in same
place, sc closely across side an top edges, making 3 sc at each corner at top
edge. Turn. Now sl st in each sc across these edges. Break off.
Base: Starting at long side, make a chain 18 inches
long. Work in pattern as for first row of bunting until row measures 14 inches.
Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. Work in pattern until piece measures 3 1/4
inches. Break off. Fold side edges of bunting to meet at center front. Sew base
neatly in place, easing in to fit. Sew zipper in place. Fold corners of bunting
down and embroider flowers with Mid. Rose in lazy daisy stitch and Beauty Pink
French knots. Make a yellow French knot at the center of each flower. Embroider
leaves and stems in Green lazy daisy stitch. Note: Embroidery is
optional.
Cap: (Front) Starting at back edge, make a chain 16
inches long.
1st row: Work in pattern as for first row of bunting
until row measures 13 inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. Work in
pattern until piece measures 4 1/2 inches. Break off.
(Back of cap): Starting at lower edge, make a chain 7
inches long.
1st row: Work in pattern until row measures 4 1/4
inches. Cut off remaining chain. Ch 1, turn. Continue to work in pattern until
piece measures 4 inches. Turn.
Next row: Sl st in first 3 sts (2 sts decreased), ch 3,
dc in next sc, sc in next 2 dc, continue in pattern across to within last 2 sts.
Ch 3, turn.
Following row: Skip first sc, dc in next sc, sc in next
2 sc, continue in pattern across, ending with sc in last dc, sc in top of
turning chain. Ch 3, turn. Work in pattern for 2 more rows. Break off. Sew front
piece to back piece.
Neck Piece: Attach yarn to lower right corner of cap, ch 13.
Break off. Attach yarn to lower left corner, ch 14 and work as follow:
1st row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in next 12 ch, sc closely
across lower edge and in each ch on opposite corner. Ch 3, turn.
2nd row: (beading) Skip first 2 dc, * half dc in ext sc, ch 1,
skip next sc. Repeat from * across. Ch 1, turn.
3rd row: Make 3 sc in each sp across. Ch 1, turn.
4th row: Sc in first 2 sc, * dc in next 2 sc, sc in next sc.
Repeat from * across. Work in pattern until neck piece measures 3 inches. Now sc
closely around all outer edges except bottom. Break off.
(Optional) Embroider across front of cap as for bunting. Cut
four 3-inch pieces of ribbon. Fold each piece to form a loop. Insert ends into
front of cap and sew in place as illustrated. Lace remaining ribbon through
beading and tie in a bow.
