Arts and Crafts Projects - Cat Nap Tea Cozy

Equipment: Paper for patterns. Pencil. Ruler. Scissors. Straight pins. Sewing and quilting needles. Dressmaker’s tracing (carbon) paper. Tracing wheel.

Materials: Lightweight cotton fabric such as broadcloth, 36" wide, 2/3 yard beige, scraps of royal blue. Soft fabric for interlining, 3/4 yard. Dacron batting. DMC pearl cotton size 5: one ball each light orange, yellow, navy, maroon, gold. Beige sewing thread.

Directions: Enlarge pattern below for cat body and separate head by copying on paper ruled in 1" squares; on head, complete half-pattern details indicated by dash lines.

For Front: Transfer patterns onto beige fabric, marking on right side of fabric with dressmaker’s carbon and tracing wheel; transfer dash-line quilting design. Leave at least 1" between the two patterns and 1" along bottom of cat body for hem; do not cut out. Cut two inner ears of blue fabric adding 1/4" all around to turn under; slip-stitch appliqués to head.

To Quilt Front: Pin and baste marked beige fabric, batting, and interlining together. Quilt along dash lines with pearl cotton, making stitches about 1/8"-1/4" long. Make tiger stripe lines yellow and orange, following illustration; outline ears in orange; make whiskers, mouth, paws, outline of tail and leg, and inside of ears maroon; make eyes navy. Embroider yellow French knots under nose; embroider nose in satin stitch with gold. Cut out the cat head and body, adding 1/4" all around for seam allowance, plus 1" hem at bottom of body.

To Complete Outside: Cut one more head piece and one more body from beige fabric, marking on wrong side of fabric and adding 1/4" seam allowance all around, plus 1" hem on body. With right sides facing, stitch quilted and unquilted head pieces together, leaving 2" unstitched. Turn head right side out; slip-stitch closed.

Sew quilted cat body to unquilted body along curve, right sides together; leave open all along bottom and leave piece wrong side out.

To Make Lining: Cut one cat body from interfacing fabric and from batting, and two from beige fabric, adding 1/4" seam allowance and 1" hem. Mark 2" grid on the interlining piece, using ruler and tailor's chalk. Pin and baste interlining piece and beige body piece together, with batting in between. Machine-stitch along grid lines.

Stitch quilted interlining to another cat body along curved edge, with right sides of beige fabric together; leave wrong side out.

To Assemble: Place lining and outer piece together so that unquilted side of outer piece faces quilted side of lining: pin and baste along curved edge, leaving last 2" free at beginning and end of curve; stitch. Turn outer piece over lining, so that wrong sides of both pieces are on the inside of tea cozy. Turn up both lining and outer piece separately for 1" at bottom, so that hems are hidden inside tea cozy; slip-stitch closed along bottom edge. Position cat's head and slip-stitch in place.

Pattern: Enlarge pattern for cat body and separate head by copying on paper ruled in 1" squares; on head, complete half-pattern details indicated by dash lines.
