Clothing: Dress — Cut
1 dress skirt on fold, sew back seam, and gather. Sew a finished hem (no raw
edges) at bottom of skirt. Right sides together (RST), sew dress bodice front
and back together at shoulder seams. Gather top of sleeve to fit armhole
opening. RST, sew gathered sleeve to seam allowance for armhole opening. Sew
underarm seams. RST, sew skirt to bottom of dress bodice (I recommend hand
sewing the skirt to bodice). When dress is on doll, neckline may be fitted by
slipstitching on each side of neck opening.
Vest: - RST,
sew vest front lining to vest front, leaving an opening to turn through. Turn to
outside and slipstitch opening closed. RST, sew vest back lining to vest back,
leaving an opening to turn through. Turn to outside and slipstitch opening
closed. Hand sew (tack) vest front and vest back together at shoulders. Hand sew
(slipstitch) sides of front and back vest pieces together. Tack front edges
together and decorate with a ribbon rosette (or other). Illustration #6 below.
Pinafore - RST,
sew top, and both side seams of bib together. Turn to outside through unsewn
bottom of bib. Sew across bottom to join bottom edges. Sew a finished hem at
pinafore skirt sides and bottom. Gather top of apron skirt to measure bottom
width of bib (set aside). Pinafore tie — fold
in half lengthwise (wrong sides together), iron raw edges in, insert gathered
skirt between edges of pinafore tie, and stitch close to edge of tie — catching back edge of tie, gathered skirt and front edge
of tie. Front of bib may be sewn in with all thickness mentioned at this time,
OR hand sewn (slipstitched to back of pinafore skirt/tie). When pinafore is
placed on top of dress, tack top bib edges to dress bodice. Illustration #7
below.
Slip: Cut one slip skirt on fold. RST, sew center seam.
Turn down top edge seam allowance to wrong side, gather (by zigzaging) over a
heavy string. When on doll, pull up to fit and tie. At bottom of slip, sew a
finished hem. Trim for Dolly: Tiny necklace or 5
1/2" of 1/2" lace at neck (necklace is shown on pattern front). Trim
for Polly: - 17" of frayed rayon cord or 17" of 1/8" ribbon
at neck (frayed cord is shown on pattern front).
