Tartan Afghan
Abbreviations: ch (chain) sc (single crochet) st (stitch) lp (loop)
Gauge in Single Crochet: 3 sts equal 1 inch
Pattern:
Woven Squares: Make 56 red and 42 green. Follow basic directions accompanying loom for basic squares. With F hook work 1 row sc in same color around each completed square, working 3 sc in each corner st.
Crochet Squares: With J hook, make 48 starting with red and 49 starting with green. With starting color, ch 13.
Row 1: Sc into second ch from hook and in each ch across, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each sc, join opposite color, ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in back lp only of each sc, ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in both lps in each sc, join opposite color, ch 1, turn.
Repeat rows 3 and 4, alternating 2 rows of each color until there are 7 stripes in all, fasten off.
With opposite color from starting and ending stripe, sc around each completed square, working 3 sc in each corner st.
Finishing: Sew squares together alternating one red woven square with one crochet square that begins and ends with green and has red sc around; make 7 strips, each consisting of 15 squares and beginning and ending each strip with a red square.
Alternating one green woven square with one crochet square that begins and ends with red and has green sc around, make 6 more strips in same manner, each consisting of 15 squares and beginning and ending each strip with a crochet square.
Join strips together with one row sc on wrong side of work alternating predominantly red strips with predominantly green strips.
Braids: Make twelve 62 inch and fourteen 49 inch. With 4 strands of red and J hook, make a ch to measure desired length, fasten off. Sew a long braid along each vertical joining or seam. Sew a short braid along each horizontal joining. With red, work sc around entire outer edge of afghan, working 3 sc in each corner st.
Fringe: Cut several strands of green to measure 8 inches. Knot 3 strands in every other sc around 4 sides of afghan. Trim ends evenly. Steam press afghan with a warm iron over a damp cloth.
