The center of this piece is worked in an attractive open work pattern made with "K" stitch. The flowering border adds the final touch. It measures about 15 inches square when made with bedspread cotton and a number 8 steel crochet hook. You may use an alternating color for flowers.

Center Portion of Doily

Row 1: Ch 78, dc in 9th ch from hook, which forms the first sp, (ch 2, dc in next third ch) 23 times, (24 sps in all).

Row 2: Ch 5, turn, dc in next dc of row 1, * ch 3, sc in next dc, ch 3, dc in next dc-("K" st made), repeat from * and work 10 more "K" sts, 1 sp.

Row 3: Ch 5, turn, dc in next dc of row 2, * ch 2, a 2-joined-tr in same dc and next dc of row 2, ch 2, dc in same dc of row 2, (reverse "K" st made), repeat from * and work 10 more reversed "K" sts, 1 sp.

Row 4: Ch5, turn, dc in dc, * ch 3, sc in 2-joined-tr of previous row, ch 3, dc in dc, repeat from * for "K" sts, 1 sp.

Row 5: Ch 5, turn, dc in dc, * ch 2, a 2-joined-tr in same dc and next dc of row below, ch 2, dc in same dc, repeat from * across for reverse "K" sts, 1 sp.

Rows 6, 7: Repeat rows 4 and 5.

Row 8: Repeat row 4.

Row 9: Ch 29, dc in 9th ch from hook, (ch 2, dc in next third ch) 6 times, ch 2, dc in last dc of row 8-(8 sps made), 1 sp, 11 reversed "K" sts, 1 sp, ch 5, dc in same place as last dc for a sp, (ch 5, turn, dc in third ch of ch 5 just made) 7 times.

Row 10: Ch 5, turn, 1 sp, 19 "K" sts, 1 sp.

Row 11: Ch 5, turn, 1 sp, 19 reversed "K" sts, 1 sp.

Rows 12, 13, 14, 15: Repeat rows 10 and 11 alternately.

Row 16: Repeat row 10.

Row 17: Extend this row 8 sps at each end as in row 9 and continue in the regular manner through row 39.

Row 40: Ch 5, turn, 9 sps, 19 "K" sts, 9 sps.

Row 41: Ch 1, sl st over last 8 sps of row 40, ch 5, 1 sp, 19 reversed "K" sts, 1 sp, omit the last 8 sps of row 40 and continue through row 47.

Row 48: Ch 5, turn, 9 sps, 11 "K" sts, 9 sps.

Row 49: Ch 1, sl st over last 8 sps of row 48, ch 5, 1 sp, 11 reversed "K" sts, 1 sp, omit the last 8 sps of row 48 and continue through row 55.

Row 56: Ch 5, turn, complete a row of 24 sps, do not cut thread.

Join flowers as follows: After the second dc of petal, ch 1, draw out a lp, insert hook in center dc of corresponding petal of completed flower, pull lp through, ch 1, sl st in top of last dc made, and complete the petal as usual.

Make a border of 16 x 16 flowers, alternating a white and a colored flower. Fill in each corner as shown in photograph.

Joining Border: Alternating 3 sc and 2 sc in each sp of center portion, work 3 sc in the first sp, 2 sc in the second sp, ch 1, pick up the flower petal, ch 1, sl st in top of last sc made, (3 sc in next sp, 2 sc in next sp) twice, pick up next flower and continue in this manner to the corner, at the corner, work a tr between the flower petals, continue in this manner until all flowers are joined, cut thread.
