Rose & Pineapple Doily

What you need: Approximately 600 yards of size 30 mercerized crochet thread is needed to make this piece. Use a size 11 or 12 crochet hook. It measures about nineteen inches in diameter.

Skill Level: Advanced

Abbreviations: Ch (chain); st (stitch); lp (loop); sl st (slip stitch); sk (skip); rnd (round); sc (single crochet); hdc (half double crochet)- thread over once as for a dc, insert hook in st and pull lp through, thread over and pull through all 3 lps at once; dc (double crochet); tr (treble)- thread over twice, work off 2 lps at a time; p (picot).

Rose Motif-Ch 5, join in first st to form a ring.

Rnd 1: Ch 6, dc in ring, * ch 3, dc in ring, repeat from * 3 times, ch 3, sl st in third St of ch 6 first made (6 sps).

Rnd 2: (Sc, hdc, 3 dc, hdc, sc) over each ch lp.

Rnd 3: * Ch 5, sc in back of work between the sc of next two petals, repeat from " around.

Rnd 4: (Sc, hdc, 5 dc, hdc, sc) over each ch lp.

Rnd 5: Repeat rnd 3 only make a ch 7.

Rnd 6: (Sc, hdc, dc, 5 tr, dc, hdc, sc) over each lp.

Rnd 7: Sl st up first petal to the dc, * ch 7, sc in center tr of petal, ch 7, sc in next dc of same petal, ch 7, sc in corresponding dc of next petal, repeat from * around, join with sl st.

Rnd 8: Sl st to center of ch lp, * ch 7, sc in next ch lp; repeat from * around, end with ch 3, tr in base of first ch 7 made-this brings thread in position to begin next rnd.

Rnd 9, 10: Same as rnd 8, only make a ch 8 and a ch 9 respectively.

Second Rose Motif-Work same as above, only join the last 2 ch lps to the first motif as follows: Ch 4, sc in any ch lp of first rose motif, ch 4, sc in next ch lp of second rose motif, ch 4, Sc in next following ch lp of first rose motif, ch 4, sc in closing of the rnd of second rose motif.

Third, Fourth, Fifth and Sixth Motifs-Work same as for others, only make two joinings on the original motif, and on each successive motif, leaving one free ch lp between joinings.

Seventh Rose Motif-Work same as others, but make three joinings, with a free ch lp between the joinings, and this completes the center section of rose motifs.

Beginning of Doily- Fasten thread in fourth ch lp of rose motif from the joining point; (ch 12, sc in next ch lp) 3 times, ch 12, dc in next ch lp, ch 12, thread over 6 times, insert in center ch of next ch lp, work off 3 lps, keeping 3 lps on needle, thread over 3 times, insert in center ch of corresponding ch lp on next rose motif, work off all the lps- this completes a "Y" stitch. Ch 12, dc in next ch lp, ch 12, sc in next ch lp, repeat around; join with sl st.

Rnd 2: Sl St to center of ch lp, (ch 13, sc in next ch lp) 3 times, now you are at the place where the "Y" st was made on previous row, (ch 13, dtr over next ch lp, ch 13) twice, ch 13, sc over next ch lp; repeat around, join with sl st.

Rnd 3: Sl st to center of ch lp, * ch 13, sc in 6th ch from hook to form a p, ch 7, sc in next ch lp, repeat from * around, join with a sl st, sl st into the center of first p made.

The beginning of pineapple design begins in the next rnd. The pineapples appear a bit full in the beginning but they lie flat when the points are closed.

Rnd 4: Ch 4, 2 trs in p, ch 3, 3 trs in same p, ch 1, a shell of (3 trs, ch 3, 3 trs) in next p, * ch 6, 8 trs in next p, ch 6, shell in next p, ch 1, shell in next p, repeat from * around; join with sl st.

Rnd 5: Sl st to center of shell, shell in shell, ch 1, shell in next shell, * ch 6, 2 trs in each of next 2 tr, tr in each of next 4 trs, 2 trs in each of next 2 trs-there will be 12 trs across the pineapple now. Ch 6, shell in next shell, ch 1, shell in next shell, repeat from * around.

Rnd 6: Repeat rnd 5, only make 1 ch between the trs of pineapple:

Rnd 7: Sl st to center of shell, shell in shell, ch 1, shell in shell, * (ch 6, sc between the next 2 trs) across pineapple, having ten lps in all, ch 6, shell in next shell, ch 1, shell in next shell, repeat from * around, join with sl st.

Rnd 8: Sl st to center of shell, shell in shell, ch 1, shell in shell, * (ch 6, sc in next ch 6 lp) across pineapple, ch 6, shell in shell, ch 1, shell in shell, repeat from * around, join with sl st.

Rnd 9: Repeat rnd 8, only make a ch 2 between each set of shells.

Rnd 10: Repeat rnd 8, only make a ch 3 between each set of shells.

Rnd 11: Repeat rnd 8, but make a ch 3, 1 tr, and ch 3, between each set of shells.

Rnd 12: Same as rnd 8, but ch 3, (tr, ch 3, tr) in tr, ch 3, shell in next shell.

Complete each pineapple separately. At the turning of each rnd, sl st to center lp of the shell, then complete a shell, and cross the pineapple again, until it works out to a point, cut and fasten thread.

Rose Motif Between Pineapples-Follow instructions for the first rose; when you come to the last row of ch lps, work as follows: Ch 4, sl st in fifth free shell point from tip of pineapple. Ch 4, sl st in next ch lp of rose motif; ch 4, sl st in next free shell point of pineapple, ch 4, sl st in next ch lp of rose motif; ch 5, sl st in tr, ch 5, sl St in next ch lp of rose motif; ch 5, sl st in next tr, ch 5, sl St in next ch lp of rose motif, ch 4, sl st in next free shell point of corresponding pineapple. Ch 4, sl st in next ch lp of rose motif, ch 4, sl st in next free shell point of pineapple, ch 4, sl St in next ch lp of rose motif; * ch 9, sc in next ch lp of rose motif; repeat from * around; cut and fasten thread.

Edge?Fasten thread in ch 3 lp of the last shell of any pineapple. Ch 4, 2 tr cluster in same lp, ch 6 for a p, 2 tr cluster in next (corresponding) shell of pineapple, ch 4, sl st in same ch lp, sl St over next 3 trs of shell, (ch 5, sl St in next free shell point of pineapple) twice, ch 2, sl st in next free ch lp of rose motif, ch 4, sl st in next Sc, ch 6, tr over next ch lp, ch 6 for a p, tr in same place, ch 6, sc in next sc. Repeat around rose motif. There will be 12 picot points on each motif. Ch 4, sc in center ch of next ch lp of rose motif, ch 2, sl St in second free shell point from previous joining (there will be one free shell point without any joining attached to it). Ch 5, sl st in next free shell point, ch 5, sl st in next free shell point, sl St to center ch of ch 3 lp of pineapple shell. Repeat around.
