Crochet Patterns - 2-Crocheted Hankie Edgings
Hairpin & Flower Lace

Note:
These are vintage hankie edgings from 1954 (Although they are beautiful,
they are equally difficult and not recommended for beginners.)
Materials: Tatting Cotton; 4 balls (color of choice);
Steel crochet hook size 13; 1 Hairpin lace loom, 1/2 inch wide.

Heading:
Insert hook thru first 2 loops and work 1
sc, ch 2, * sc thru next 2 loops, ch 2; repeat from * until piece measures same
as one side of handkerchief (having a multiple of 5 sc), to form corner: work
[ 1 sc thru next 10 lps] twice (corner group made), ch 2; work other sides
and corners to correspond, join (with sl st in first sc), fasten off. Matching
corners, sew Heading around handkerchief. Cut and sew ends of Hairpin Lace
together at center.
Edging:
Rnd 1: Working along outer edge, sc thru
first 2 loops (at joining), working around corner group, [ ch 4, sc thru next 2
loops] 10 times, mark last sc made with thread, * ch 2, sc thru next 2 loops;
repeat from * to and including first 2 loops of next corner group (having a
multiple of 5 ch-2 lps from marked sc), mark last sc made, [ch 4, sc thru next 2
loops] 10 times, mark last sc made; continue in same way around, join.
Rnd 2--Ch 1, sc in joined st, * ch 9, skip next ch-4 Lp,
long tr in next sc, ch 9, skip next ch-4 Lp, sc in next sc *; rpt between *'s 4
times (ending last rpt in marked sc), ** ch 9, skip next 2 ch-2 Lps, long tr in
next ch-2 Lp, ch 9, skip next 2 ch-2 Lps, sc in next sc; rpt from ** to and
including first marked sc of next corner group; rpt between *'s 5 times;
continue in same way around, join.
Rnd 3--Ch 12, skip joined st, tr in next long tr, ch 8, *
tr in next sc, ch 8, tr in next long tr, ch 8; rpt from * around, join in 4th ch
of ch-12. Fasten off.
Flower Border:
First Flower--Ch 5, join into ring, ch 1, 12 sc in ring,
sl st in each of first 2 sc, ** - * ch 4, yo twice, draw up a loop in same st
as last sl st, [yo, thru 2 loops on hook] twice, yo twice, draw up a loop in
same st, [yo, thru 2 loops] twice, yo, draw thru all 3 loops on hook **, ch 4,
sl st in same st just used (Petal made), sl st in each of 2 sc on ring; rpt
from * around, join in first sl st, mark 5th Petal (6 Petals in rnd). Fasten
off.
2nd Flower--Work as for first Flower to end of 5th Petal,
mark 5th Petal, sl st in each of 2 sc on ring; rpt between **'s of first Flower
once, drop loop from hook, from right side insert hook in top of 3rd Petal of
previous Flower and draw dropped loop thru, ch 4, sl st in last st used on ring
(thus completing 6th Petal), join in first sl st, fasten off. Make and attach
desired number of Flowers as for 2nd Flower.
To attach Flower Border to Edging: work 1 tr in joined st of rnd 3
of Edging, ch 6, drop loop from hook, from right side insert hook in top of
marked Petal of first Flower and draw dropped loop thru, ch 2, * tr in next tr
on rnd 3, ch 2, drop loop from hook, draw dropped loop thru top of next Petal on
same Flower, ch 6, tr in next tr on rnd 3, ch 6, drop loop from hook, draw
dropped loop thru top of marked Petal on next Flower, ch 2; rpt from *, join,
fasten off. Tack first and last Flowers together.
Lover's Knot & Sequins

Materials:
Tatting Cotton, 3 balls Black or (color of choice);
Sequins; Steel Crochet Hook, Size 13.
Work group of 4 sc in any corner of handkerchief, sc along
edge of handkerchief (working 17 sc to 1 inch) to next corner, 4 sc in corner;
work other sides and corners to correspond, join (with sl st in first sc),
fasten off.
Rnd 2--String sequins on tatting cotton, from wrong side
work 1 sc in 4th sc before a corner group, work a Knot-st as follows: * draw
up loop on hook 1/4", yo, thru loop, insert hook between vertical bar and
long loop and draw up a loop, yo, thru 2 loops on hook; rpt from * once (Knot-st
made), sc in next sc, [a Knot-st and 1 sc] in each of 4 sc, work a Knot-st,
draw up a loop in next sc, bring a sequin up, yo, thru 2 loops on hook (thus
attaching a sequin at corner), [a Knot-st and 1 sc] in each of 5 sc, ** a Knot-st, skip 3 sc, draw up a loop in next sc, bring a sequin up,
yo, thru 2
loops on hook, a Knot-st, skip 3 sc, sc in next sc; rpt from ** to 4 sc before
next corner group; work other corners and sides to correspond, join.
Rnd 3-- Ch 4, skip joined sc, * work 1 sc in first loop
of next Knot-st, sc in 2nd loop of same Knot-st, work a Knot-st; rpt from *
around, join. Rpt rnd 3 six times. Fasten off.
Rnd 10--String sequins, work 1 sc in first loop of any Knot-st, sc in 2nd
loop of same Knot-st, * draw up loop on hook 1/4 inch, yo, thru loop, insert
hook between vertical bar and long loop and draw up a loop, bring a sequin up,
yo and draw thru 2 loops on hook, work 2nd half of Knot-st, sc in first loop of
next Knot-st, sc in 2nd loop of same Knot-st; rpt from * around, join, fasten
off.
