Crochet Patterns - Treetop Angel

Note: This project is for advanced crochet skill
level. It may also be displayed year round. Try
variations with gold crochet thread for wings and halo.

What you need: For each angel you will need
a small
amount of white Coats and Clark South Maid Crochet Cotton and number 6 steel
crochet hook.
Gauge: 9 dc equal 1 inch
Rnd 1: Beginning at top of head, ch 4 (counts as dc). 8 Dc in
4th ch from hook. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch9 dc.
Rnd 2: Ch 3. Dc in same St as sl st. 2 Dc in each dc around.
Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 18 dc.
Rnds 3 through 5: Ch 3. Dc in each dc around. Join with sl st
to top of beginning ch. Note: At this point check to see that work is turned
right side out. Hook should be inserted from outside, toward inside of head.
Rnd 6: (Neckline) Ch 1, * pull up lp in each of next 2 dc. Yo
and pull through all 3 lps on hook. Sc in next dc. Repeat from * around 12
sts.
Rnd 7: (Body) Ch 3, dc in same St as sl st. * 2 Dc in next sc,
dc in next sc. Repeat from * around. Dc in sl st of last rnd 20 dc. Join with
sl St.
Rnds 8 through 11: Ch 3, dc in each dc around. Join with sl st
in top of beginning ch 20 dc in each rnd.
Rnd 12: (Waistline) Ch 1, hdc in first dc. * Yo and pull up lp
in each of next 2 dc, yo and pull through all 4 lps at once. Hdc in next dc.
Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in ch 14 sts.
Rnd 13: (Skirt) Ch 3, sk first st, * in next hdc work shell of
2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc. Dc in next hdc. Repeat from * around. Join to top of beginning
ch with sl st 6 shells.
Rnd 14: Ch 3, * shell in shell, dc in dc. Repeat from *
around. Join with sl st in 3rd st of beginning ch.
Rnd 15: Ch 4, *shell in shell, ch 1, dc in dc, ch 1. Repeat
from * around. Join with sl st in 3rd st of beginning ch.
Rnds 16 through 21: Ch 4, *work shell of 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in
shell. Ch 1, dc in dc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in 3rd st of
beginning ch.
Rnds 22, 23: Ch 4, *work shell of 4 dc, ch 2, 4 dc in shell.
Ch 1, dc in dc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in 3rd st of
beginning ch.
Rnd 24: Ch 4, *work shell of 4 dc, ch 3, 4 dc
in shell. Ch 1, dc in dc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st in 3rd st
of beginning ch.
Rnd 25: Ch 2, * in shell work 12 tr. Ch 1, sc
in dc, ch 1. Repeat from * around. Join with sl St in first st of beginning ch.
Fasten off and weave in end.
HAND, ARM AND SLEEVE: (Make 2) Leaving 2 inch
length of thread, ch 3. Dc in 3rd ch from hook. Ch 2, sl St in same ch as dc
(hand completed).
Arm: Ch 15. Weave 2 inch length into ch.
Lay angel flat with line where rnds are joined
straight down center back. Note: Beginning ch of each rnd will be just to right
of center. With back of angel toward you, insert hook at top of Rnd 7 at folded
edge. Join arm with sl St. Ch 3.
Right Sleeve: Rnd 1: Turn angel upside down
with front toward you. Work 2 dc in same st as sl st. Working vertically from
head toward waistline, work 3 dc over dc on front side of arm. Turn angel right
end up. Working vertically from waistline toward head, work 3 dc over dc on back
side of arm. Hold arm inside sleeve. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 9
dc.
Rnds 2 through 5: Ch 3, dc in each dc around.
Join with sl st to top of beginning ch.
Rnds 6, 7: Ch 3, inc one dc at beginning and
end of each rnd, dc in each dc around 11 dc in Rnd 6, 13 dc in Rnd 7. Join
with sl st to top of beginning ch, fasten off.
Left Sleeve: With front of angel facing you,
head end up, join 2nd arm at opposite side of body with sl st, ch 3. Note: There
are 8 dc between sleeves on both front and back of angel body Turn angel, head
end down, back facing you. Work 2 dc in same st as sl st. Working vertically
from head toward waistline, work 3 dc over dc on back side of arm. Turn angel,
head end up, front facing you. Working from waistline toward head, work 3 dc
over dc on front side of arm. Hold arm inside sleeve, join with sl st in top of
beginning ch. Continue working Rnds 2 through 7 as for first sleeve.
Wings: (Right Wing)
Row 1:
Join thread with sl at to bottom of beginning ch of Rnd 8 (4th st behind right
sleeve). Ch 3. Working lengthwise over dc toward waistline, work shell of one tr, ch 2, 2 tr. Ch 1. Over beginning ch of Rnd 9, work shell of 2 dc, ch 2, 2
dc. Ch 1. Over beginning ch of Rnd 10, work shell of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc 3
shells. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Working back toward head, in next 2
shells and next 2 sp between shells, work shell of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc 4 shells
made. In last shell, work shell of 2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr. Tr in top of beginning ch
5 shells in row. Ch 4, turn.
Row 3: In first shell work shell of 3 tr, ch
2, 3 tr. In each of next 4 shells work shell of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc. Dc in top of
turning ch. Ch 3, turn.
Row 4: In each of next 3 shells work shell of
3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. In each of last 2 shells work shell of 3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr. Tr in
top of turning ch, turn.
Row 5: In first shell work 10 tr, 2 dc. Sc
between shells. In next 2 shells work 8 dc, with sc between shells. In last 2
shells, work 7 dc, with sc between shells. Join with sl st in top of turning ch.
S1 St along edge of wing to center back. Sl st into last dc of Rnd 10 of body.
Left Wing:
Row 1: Ch 3. Working toward head over last dc of Rnd 10, work shell
of dc, ch 2, 2 dc. Ch 1. Over last dc of Rnd 9, work shell of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc.
Ch 1. Over last dc of Rnd 8, work shell of 2 tr, ch 2, 2 tr. Ch 4, turn.
Row 2: In first shell work shell of 2 tr, ch
2, 2 tr. In next 2 sp and next 2 shells work shell of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc. Dc in
top of beginning ch 5 shells. Ch 3, turn.
Row 3: In first 4 shells work
shell of 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc. In last shell work shell of 3 tr, ch 2, 3 tr. Tr in
top of turning ch. Ch 4, turn.
Row 4: In first 2 shells work shell of 3 tr,
ch 2, 3 tr. In next 3 shells work shell of 3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc. Dc in top of
turning ch, turn.
Row 5: In first 2 shells work 7 dc with sc between shells. In
next 2 shells work 8 dc, with sc between shells. In last shell work 2 dc, 10 tr.
Sc in top of turning ch.
To finish top edge of wings, working over
turning ch, *work 4 sc in sp, sc in st between sp. Repeat from * to center back.
Sl st into body and repeat from * along edge of opposite wing. Join with sl st
in first tr. Fasten off thread, weave in end.
HALO: Ch 22, join with sl st to form ring. Join at top of Rnd
2, center back of head. Fasten off.
Blocking: You will need fabric stiffener, cone shaped form,
plastic sandwich bags or clear plastic wrap, rustproof straight pins, rubber
band and ruler.
Tie arms together at wrists for prayer position.
Stuff head with one half sandwich (or plastic wrap) bag. Use
one and a half bags to stuff body. Place another plastic bag over form and
secure tightly to base with rubber band, to prevent angel from sticking to form.
Wet angel with fabric stiffener. Place skirt over form. Pull
down and measure from base to be sure it is even all around. Spread wings. Place
pin through each wing, into back of head to hold wings in position until dry
Shape arms and sleeves. Place pin into front of body to hold hands in desired
position. Shape halo and wings again during drying process. Bend head slightly
forward for prayer position. When completely dry, remove from form. Remove
plastic bags from inside. Use small brush to remove flakes of excess stiffener
from inside.
