Crochet Patterns - Shell or Dress

This unique and lovely pattern allows you to create a shell
top or continue on to make a dress.
Sizes: Small, Medium to Large. Directions are given for Small size. Changes
for Medium to Large size given in parentheses.
Crochet Pattern

Materials Required: American Thread
Company Dawn "Mothspun" or similar yarn, 2 (3) 2 ounce skeins Primrose
for shell; 5 (6) 2 ounce skeins Primrose for dress. Plastic Crochet Hook Size J
or any size hook which will result in stitch gauge given below.
Gauge: 2 Cluster sts and 1
Shell = 3 inches
Shell:
Back: Ch Ch 44 (52), keeping last loop of each st on hook 2
dc in 4th st from hook, Y 0 and work off all loops at one time, ch 1,
keeping last loop of each st off hook
3 d c in same space, Y 0 and work off all loops at one time (cluster st), Note:
all 1st cluster groups will be worked in this manner), * skip
next 3 sts of ch, 5 d c in next st (shell), skip next 3 sts of ch, 1 cluster st,
ch 1, 1 cluster st in next st (cluster group), repeat from * across ch, ch 1,
turn.
2nd row: Sl st in ch 1 of 1st cluster group, cluster group in same
space, * shell in center d c of next shell, cluster group in ch 1 space of next
cluster group, repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until back
measures 13 inches from beg or length desired. Place marker on each side for
armholes, then continue pattern for 4 inches.
Shape shoulders and neckline:
Next row: Work across 1 cluster group, 1 shell and 1
cluster group, ch 1, turn.
Next 3 rows: Continue in pattern across these
sts, cut yarn. Skip 3 (4) shells and 2 (3) cluster groups for neckline, attach
yarn in ch 1 of next cluster group and work other side to correspond.
Front: Ch 68 (76), 4 d c in 4th st from hook, skip next 3
sts of ch, * cluster st group in next st of ch, skip next 3 sts of ch, 5 d c
shell in next st of ch, repeat from * across ch, ch 1, turn.
2nd row: Sl st to center d c of shell, ch 3, 4 d c in same space, *
cluster group in ch 1 space of next cluster group, shell in center d c of next
shell, repeat from * across row, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until front is same
length to markers, cut yarn, turn.
Shape Armholes: Skip 1 shell, 1
cluster group and 1 shell for underarm, attach yarn in ch 1 of next cluster
group, cluster group in same space, continue in pattern across row to within 2nd
shell from end (underarm), turn. Then complete same as back from the marker to
top of shoulders, cut yarn.
Finishing: Sew shoulder and side seams. Work a row of
sl sts
around armholes and neck edge. Work a row of s c around lower edge working 3 s c
over each loop and 1 s c in base of other sts, join, cut yarn.
Dress:
Work same as Shell but work back and front for 30 inches or
length desired to underarm. Then work remainder of dress same as Shell.
