Crochet Patterns - Tulip Garden Afghan

This lovely afghan is made by appliquéing bouquets on joined
squares.
Materials: 60 ounces of light green, 4-ply knitting
worsted yarn; about 4 ounces each of purple and dark green; 6 ounces medium
green and crochet hook size G.

Abbreviations: ch
(chain) hdc (half double crochet) dc (double crochet) sk (skip) st (stitch) sc
(single crochet) sl st (slip stitch)
Gauge: 11 dc
equal 2 3/4 inches; 6 rows equal 2 3/4 inches.
Square—(Make 88): Starting at lower edge
with light green, ch 24 to measure 6 inches.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch
across—22 dc counting turning ch as 1 dc, ch 3, turn.
Next 11 Rows: Sk first dc, dc in each dc
across and in top of turning ch—22 dc, ch 3, turn. At end of last row omit
turning ch. Do not fasten off. Sc closely around square making 3 sc in each
corner. Fasten off.
Leaf Motif—Large Leaf
(Make 72): With medium green, ch 14, sc in second ch from hook and in next ch,
hdc in next ch, dc in next 8 ch, hdc in next ch, 2 sc in last ch. Working along
opposite side of starting ch, hdc in next ch, dc in next 8 ch, hdc in next ch,
sc in next ch, sc in next 2 ch, sl st in tip. Fasten off.
Small Leaf—(Make 48): With dark green, ch
14. Working across one side of ch only, work as for large leaf, ending with sc
in last ch. Fasten off.
Stem—(Make 24): With double strand of medium
green, make a ch 3 inches long. Fasten off.
Sew 3 large and 2 small leaves alternating (as
shown in photo above) to one square, sew stem in place.
Make 24 leaf motifs.
Tulip Motif—Tulip Petal—(Make
72): With purple, ch 11. Dc in 4th ch from hook and in next 5 ch, hdc in next ch, 2 sc in last
ch, working along opposite side of starting ch make hdc in next ch, dc in next 6
ch, ch 3, sl st in last ch used. Fasten off.
Leaf—(Make 48): With medium green, work as
for small leaf of leaf motif.
Stem—(Make 24): Work as for stem of leaf
motif. Sew 3 petals to form a tulip as shown, to one square. Sew 2 leaves and
stem in place.
Make 24 tulip motifs.
Block—(Make 12): Arrange motifs as desired,
stems meeting at center, sew 2 tulip and 2 leaf motifs neatly together. Sew
together alternating blocks and plain motifs.
Border:
Rnd 1: With right side facing, join
light green to any sc, ch 3 and dc closely around, making 5 dc in each corner,
join with sl st to top of ch 3.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, sk first dc, dc in each dc
around, making 5 dc in each corner st, join and turn.
Rnd 3 (Wrong Side): Sl st in each st around,
join. Fasten off.
Block to measurements.
