Crochet Patterns - Altar Lace

This vintage altar lace in filet measures approximately 11 inches deep, including edge. To make about 23 inches of lace, including edge, you will need approximately 300 yards of white Six Cord Mercerized Crochet Thread size 50 and a size 11 steel crochet hook.

Gauge: 6 sps equal 1 inch; 6 rows equal 1 inch

Abbreviations: bl (block) sp (space) dec (decrease) inc (Increase) ch (chain) st (stitch) sl st (slip stitch) dc (double crochet) sk (skip)

Lace: Starting at lower edge, make a ch about 24 inches long, or length desired. If a longer ch for wider altar lace is desired (there are about 18 chs to each inch) it must be long enough to make a number of sps divisible by 82 sps, plus 56 sps.

Row 1: Dc in 8th ch from hook * ch 2, sk 2 chs, dc in next ch for a sp, repeat from * across until there are 138 sps. Cut off remaining ch, ch 5, turn.

Rows 2 through 5: Sk last dc of last row, dc in next dc, ch 2, dc in next dc for a sp over sp, repeat from * across, end with ch 2, dc in third st of turning ch, ch 5, turn.

Row 6: Make a sp over each of next 24 sps, (2 dc over next sp, dc in next dc for a bl over sp) 8 times, make a sp over each of next 74 sps, make a bl over each of next 8 sps, make a sp over each of last 24 sps.

Row 7: Make 24 sps, (dc in each of next 3 dc for a bl over bl) 8 times, make 74 sps, make a bl over each of next 8 bls, make 24 sps, ch 5, turn.

Row 8: Make 24 sps, ch 2, sk next 2 dc, dc in next dc for a sp over bl, make 6 bls, make 75 sps, then 6 bls, make a sp over bl, make a sp over each of last 24 sps, ch 5, turn.

You are now ready to begin working from row 4 on chart below. Begin at A on chart and work to B (if altar lace is made wider these sts are repeated). Each row ends by working from A to C once. When last row of chart is completed, work 5 rows of sps as at beginning. Fasten off.
