Crochet Patterns - Infant Cardigan

Directions are given for size 6 months with
size 1 year in parentheses. Materials needed are about 3 ounces Columbia Minerva
Baby Nantuck 3-ply yarn, 1 skein embroidery floss in contrasting color, 1 pair
each numbers 1 and 3 standard knitting needles, size 3 steel crochet hook, 6
small pearl buttons.

Gauge: 7 sts equal 1
inch, 10 rows equal 1 inch
Pattern St: (Multiple of 6)
Rows 1, 3:
* P 2, k 4, repeat
from * across.
Rows 2, 4, 6, 8: P.
Rows 5, 7: K 3, * p 2, k 4, repeat from
* across, end p2,
k 1.
Repeat these 8 rows for pattern st.
BACK: With number 1
needles, cast on 72 (78) sts. K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1 inch.
Change to number 3 needles, work pattern st
until entire piece measures 7 (7-1/2) inches.
Shape Raglan Armhole: At
beginning of each of next 2 rows, bind off 2 (2) sts—68 (74) sts.
Row 3: K 2 sts tog, work across in pattern as
established to last 2 sts, k 2 tog.
Row 4: P.
Repeat these 2 rows 18 (20) times more. Sl
remaining 30 (32) sts onto holder for neck.
LEFT FRONT: With number 1 needles, cast on 36
(38) sts. K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 1 inch.
Change to number 3 needles and work pattern st
(on size 1 only, end rows 1 and 3 with p 2; rows 5 and 7 with k 3) until piece
measures same as back, ending same row of pattern st.
Shape Raglan Armhole: At beginning of next
row, bind off 2 sts.
Row 2: P.
Row 3: K 2 tog, work in pattern as established
to end of row.
Repeat last 2 rows 9 (11) times more, end p
row—24 sts.
Shape Neck: K 2 tog, work to last 10 sts, sl
these 10 sts onto holder. Continue to dec 1 st at arm edge every other row in
same manner as before 7 times more, AT SAME TIME, dec 1 st at neck edge every
other row 6 times, fasten off.
Right Front: Work to correspond to
left front, reversing placing of pattern and all shaping. To dec for armhole,
work to last 2 sts, k these 2 sts tog.
Sleeves: With number 1
needles, cast on 36 (36) sts. K 1, p1 in ribbing for 1
inch.
Change to number 3 needles and work pattern
st, inc 1 st each end of needle every 3/4 inch 6 (9) times, forming new patterns
as sts are inc. Work even in pattern as established on 48 (54) sts until piece
measures 61/2 (7-1/2) inches, end with p row.
Shape Raglan Cap: At beginning
of each of next 2 rows, bind off 2 sts. Dec in same manner as on back until 8
(10) sts on needle. Place these 10 sts onto holder.
Finishing: Sew sleeves to back and
front armholes. Sew underarm seams.
Neckband: With number 1 needles, pick
up 82 sts around neck including sts from holders. K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 14
rows. Bind off in ribbing. Fold neck-band in half, sew bound-off sts to first
row of ribbing on wrong side.
Front Band
Row 1:
Starting at lower right front edge, work sc to first row of neckband, ch 1,
turn.
Row 2: Buttonholes: Sc in first st, ch
1, sk 1 st, make 5 more buttonholes, evenly spaced, last one to be made 3 sts
above end of ribbing, work to end, ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in each st and under each ch,
fasten off.
Left Front Band: Work in same
manner as right front band, omitting buttonholes. Block to size. Sew on buttons.
Tie Cord:
Make double chain as follows: Using 2 strands of yarn, ch 2, insert hook into
first st, * with right hand draw through a lp, with right hand draw
through both lps on hook *. To continue, insert hook into left lp, then
work from * to * until ch measures 23 inches, fasten off. Pull
cord through neck opening, tie a loose knot at each end of cord.
Neck Trim: Using
embroidery floss, make a chain 11 1/2 (12) inches long. Sc in second ch from hook
and in each ch st across, fasten off.
Thread tapestry needle with piece of yarn and
sl st band around first row of neck ribbing to within front bands.
