Crochet Patterns - Crocheted Shell

Pattern: Directions are given for small size (10-12),
changes for medium (14-16) and large sizes (18-20) are given in parentheses.
This yarn comes in 50-gram balls and requires 6 (8, 8) balls; use a plastic or
aluminum crochet hook size F.

Measurement: 36 (40, 44) inches. Back or Front at bustline: 18 (20, 22) inches.
Back: To begin, ch
loosely 76 (84, 92) to measure 18 (20, 22) inches.
Row 1: Dc in 4th ch st from hook, * sk 3 ch, shell of (3 dc, ch 1,3 dc) in next
ch st, sk 3 ch sts, V st of (dc, ch 2, dc) in next ch, repeat from * across to
last 8 ch, end sk 3 ch sts, shell in next ch st, sk 3 ch sts, dc in last ch.
There are 9 (10, 11) patterns (including 1/2 V st each end), ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Dc in first dc, * V st in ch 1 sp of
next shell, shell in ch 2 sp of next V st, repeat from * across, end V st in ch
1 sp of last shell, dc in last dc, ch 3, turn.
Row 3: Dc in first dc, * shell in ch 2 sp of
next V st, V st in ch 1 sp of next shell, repeat from * across, end with shell
in ch 1 sp of last V st, dc in last dc, ch 3, turn.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 for pattern, working to
about 15 inches or desired length to underarm, end with pattern row 3. Fasten
off.
Shape Armholes—Next Row:
Leave off 1 shell, sl st and dc in ch 2 sp of
next V st, work in pattern across, end with V st in ch 2 sp of second shell from
end, dc in sp of next V st—7 (8, 9) patterns, ch 3, turn. Work even until
armholes measure about 6 1/2 (7, 7 1/2) inches, end on pattern row 3 (3, 2),
turn.
Shape Shoulders—Row 1: Working on first
shoulder, ch 1, sl st loosely to last dc of first (first— second) V st, ch 3,
work in pattern across to other shoulder, ending with dc in first dc of first
(first— second) V st of arm edge, ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sl st loosely to last dc of first shell, ch 3, dc in sp of next
V st, work (1 V st, 1 shell) 1 (2, 2) times. V st in sp of next shell, dc in sp of next V st, ch 2, sl st in
first dc of next shell. Fasten off.
Front:
Work as for
back until armholes measure about 3 1/2 (4, 4) inches, ending with pattern row 2
(2, 3).
Shape Neck: Work in pattern, ending with dc in
sp of third V st, drop yarn, sk next 1 (2, 2) patterns and 1 shell, join second
ball of yarn with sl st and dc in sp of next V st, work in pattern to end of
row. Working with separate balls of yarn, work even on both sides at once until
armholes measure same as back, end on pattern row 3 (3, 2), turn.
Shape Shoulders—Row 1: Work same as
row 1 of back shoulders. Fasten off yarn of each shoulder.
Finishing: Sew shoulder and side seams.
Edging: Working
across back of neck, from right side, join yarn to dc at right of back neck
edge, sc in same st, * shell of 6 dc in ch-sp of next V st, sc in ch-sp
of next shell, repeat from * across back of neck, shell of 6 dc in dc-sp
on side of front neck, sk 1 dc-sp, sc in next dc-sp, continue in this manner on
sides of neck and work shell in sp of V sts and sc in sp of shells across center
front neck. Join in first sc. Fasten off. Work same edging around armhole edges.
From right side, join yarn to bottom of side seam, work 1 sc at seam joining, **
sc at base of shell, shell of 6 dc at base of V st, repeat from * * around
lower edge. Join in first sc. Fasten off. Steam-press shell on wrong side.
