Crochet Patchwork Quilting - Basic Instructions for Patchwork
Crochet
Crocheted patchwork quilting has recently become very popular again.
With the basic technique and instructions given here, you can begin to make
crocheted quilted afghans and pillows very easily. Once you know how to make the
quilt blocks you can create your own designs and use a multiple of colors. You
can even make a quilt out of all of your old scraps which will look like a
granny quilt.

Patchwork Pattern: Size
of square: 6"
Materials: Knitting
worsted weight yarn (one 4-oz. skein will make at least 5 complete squares of
one color or 10 halves). Aluminum or plastic crochet hook size 5 or G. Tapestry
needle. Gauge: 4 sc = 1"; 4 rows =
1" Square: Fist Half; With first
color, leaving 12" end for sewing, ch 35 to measure 9". Row
1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across - 34 sc. Check gauge; piece
should measure 8 1/2" wide. Ch 1 loosely, turn. Row
2: Sk first st, sc in each sc across to last 2 sts, sk 1 st, sc in last sc -
32 sc. Ch 1 loosely, turn. Rows 3-17: Repeat row
2-2 sc remain. Ch 1, turn. Last row: Sk
first sc, sc in last sc. End off; leave end for sewing. Second
Half: Row 1: (right side); With
second color, leaving end for sewing, make lp on hook. Working on opposite side
of starting chain and beg at same end as hanging end, sc in each of 34 ch. work
as for first half. Finishing: Steam
squares lightly to same 6" square size. Arrange squares in any desired
pattern, sew squares together on wrong side with hanging ends. After sewing,
weave in ends on wrong side for 1" or 2"; cut ends close to work. Enjoy!
