Crochet Hats

These charming hats will make a warm and fun addition to any wardrobe for adults or children.  Primarily intermediate crochet projects, the finished hats are versatile and great for chilly fall and winter weather.  Given as a home-made gift, you are sure to receive many compliments from special friends and loved ones.

pom pom hat

Pompom Hat 

Difficulty:  Intermediate 

Materials

2 skeins Yarn (100% Wool, any color)

1 crochet hook: metric size 7.00/US size K

Directions

Pattern: Chain 11, 1 sc into 2nd chain from hook, 1 sc into each st to end of row, ch 1, turn.

Next Row 1 sc into each st to end of row, ch 1, turn Next Row Skip the first stitch, 1 sc in 2nd st, 1 sc in each st to end of row, ch 1, turn

Repeat this last row until 1 st remains. Fasten off.

Make 4 more pieces the same as the first for a total of 5 pieces. Sew the sections together.

With the right side of the work facing you, work 4 rows of sc around the base of the cap, working only into the top loop of the previous row. Fasten off.

To Make Peak: Chain 29. 1 sc into 2nd chain from hook, 1 sc into each st to end of row, chi, turn

Row 1: 1 sc in first st, dec 1 st in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, dec 1 st in next 2 sts, 1 sc into each of next 3 sts, dec 1 st in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next st, dec 1 st in next 2 sts. Repeat in reverse order for the other side.

Row 2: 1 sc in first st, dec 1 st in next 2 sts, 1 sc in each st to last 3 sts, dec 1 st in next 2 sts, l sc in last st, chi, turn

Row 3: 1 sc in each st to end of row.

Work 1 row of sc around the entire outer edge of the peak. Fasten off leaving an 18” end. Use this end to sew the peak to the cap.

Make a small pom-pom with yarn and sew firmly to the top of the crown.

Materials

2 skeins Yarn (100% Wool, any color)

1 crochet hook: metric size 7.00/US size K

Directions

Back: Chain 11, l sc in 2nd chain from hook, 1 sc into each st to end of row, ch 1, turn

Next Row: l sc in each st to end of row, ch 1, turn

Next Row: 2sc in first st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2sc in last st, ch 1, turn

Next Row: l sc in each st to end of row, ch 1, turn. Repeat this row 3 more times

Next Row: 2sc in first st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2sc in last st, ch 1, turn

Work 5 rows even

Next Row Skip the first st, 1 sc in each st to the end of the row, ch 1, turn.

Repeat this last row until 8 sts remain. Fasten off.

Sides: Chain 9, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1 sc in each st to end of chain, ch1, turn

Next Row 1 sc in each st to end of row, chi, turn

Next Row 2sc in first st, 1 sc in each st to last st, 2sc in last st, ch 1, turn

Work even on these sts until the work measures 18" Next Row Skip the first st, 1 sc in 2nd st, 1 sc in each st to end of row, ch 1, turn.

Repeat this last row once more. Fasten off.

Sew the sides of the bonnet to the back.

Difficulty:  Intermediate

Materials

2 skeins Yarn (100% Wool, any color)

1 crochet hook: metric size 7.00/US size K

Directions

Chain 10, 1 sc in 2nd chain from hook, 1 sc in each st to end of chain, ch 1, turn

Next Row 1 sc into each st across the row, chi, turn Repeat this last row until the work measures 21". Fasten off.

Top of Crown: Ch4, form into a ring and join with a sl st. Work 8sc into the ring, working into the top loop of each chain only, join with a sl st, ch 1

Next Round 1 sc into each st of the previous round increasing 4 sts evenly in the round, join with a sl st, ch 1 Next Round 1 sc into each st, increasing 6 sts evenly in the round, join with a sl st, ch1

Next Round 1 sc into each st, increasing 8 sts evenly in the round, join with a sl st, ch l

Continue in this manner until the work measures 6-1/2'' across. Fasten off. Sew the side of the crown seam and then sew the top of the crown into position.

Brim: With right side facing, work 1 sc into each st around base of crown, join with a sl St, ch 1

Next Round * 1 sc into first st, 2 sc into next st *, repeat from * to * to complete round, join with a sl st, ch 1.

Next Round Work 1 sc into each st, increasing 8 sts evenly in the round, join with a sl st, ch 1. Continue working in this manner, increasing evenly in each round until the brim measures 2". Fasten off.

Band: Chain 58, 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook, 1sc in each st to end of chain. Fasten off. Sew in any yarn ends and sew hatband into position.
