Juliet Cap: This delicate little cap was crocheted in cotton, then soaked in a
sugar solution and dried over a mold to retain the shape.

Size: To fit a 22" head
Materials: 2 oz of a fine crochet cotton (No. 5); Size E crochet hook; Approx. 60 glass beads;
Matching thread; Sewing needle.
Gauge: 2-1/2 ch-5 loops to 4" worked on size E hook. To save time, take time to check gauge.
To make: Ch 8 and join to first ch with a sl st to form a ring.
1st round Ch 3 to count as first dc, 17 dc in ring, join with a sl st to 3rd of
ch-3.
2nd round sl st in top of first dc, ch 18, 1 sc in next dc, *(1 sc, ch 18, 1 sc) in
next dc, rep from * to end. 18 loops.
3rd round Sl st in first 9 ch, *ch 5, 1 sc in top of next loop, rep
from * to end, ch 5, sl st in first loop.
4th round Sl st in first 3ch, *ch 5, (1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc) in 3rd ch
of ch-5 loop, rep from * to end, (1 sc, ch 3, 1 sc) in base of first ch.
5th-llth rounds As 4th round.
12th round Sl st in first 3 ch, *ch 6, 1 sc in 3rd ch of ch-5 loop,
rep from * to end, ch 6, sl st in first ch-6 loop.
13th round Ch 1, sc in every ch to end, sl st in first ch.
14th round As 13th round.
15th round Work in crab st (sc worked from left to right). Fasten
off.
To finish
Melt a cup of sugar in a pan with half a cup of water. Bring to a boil. When sugar is
dissolved, let syrup cool, then soak hat in solution. Wring gently and dry over a mold or
a bowl of suitable size. Allow seven to ten days for it to dry at room temperature.
Protect from flies and wasps with a muslin cover. When dry, sew a bead to the top of each
of 18 dc of first round, to the center of each of 18 ch-18 loops of 2nd round and to the
center of each ch-6 loop of 12th round.
