Crochet Patterns - Irish Crochet Doily
"Doilies" Spool #201 © 1944
This little bit of vintage Irish charm makes a lovely addition to any
table. You will need about 250 yards of number 30 crochet cotton and a size 10
steel crochet hook to make a doily that measures approximately 19 inches long.
Abbreviations: ch (chain) dtr (double treble) sl st (slip stitch) p (picot)
dc (double crochet) tr (treble) sc (single crochet) rnd (round)
sk (skip) lp (loop).
Center Medallion: Ch 10, sl st in first ch st to form a
ring.
Rnd 1: Ch 3, 19 dc in ring, 51 st in top of ch 3.
Rnd 2: * Ch 15, make a 3 tr cluster in st at base of ch 15,
(to make a 3 tr cluster: work 3 tr in st indicated, hold last lp of each tr on
hook, thread over and work off all lps at once), ch 15, sl st in same st with
cluster, sc in each of next 5 dc, repeat from * 3 times. Fasten off.
Rnd 3: (4 dc over ch 15, ch 4, sl st at base of ch 4 for a p)
3 times, 4 dc over same ch, * work in same manner over next ch 15, 4 dc over
next ch 15, ch 2, sl st in last p on last ch, ch 2, sl st at base of first ch 2
for a joined p, (4 dc, p) twice over same ch 15, 4 dc over same ch 15, repeat
from * around, end with a ch 2, sl st in first p made, ch 2, sl st at base of
first ch 2, 4 dc in same ch 15, sl st in top of first dc. Fasten off.
Side Medallions: Ch 10, sl st in first ch st to form a
ring.
Rnd 1: Repeat rnd 1 of center medallion.
Rnd 2: Work in same manner as for rnd 2 of center medallion
except to repeat twice instead of 3 times, then sc in each remaining stitch of
ring.
Rnd 3: 4 dc in next ch 15, ch 2, sl st in last
p made next to last joined p in rnd 3 of center medallion, ch 2, sl st for a p,
4 dc in same ch 15, ch 2, sl st in next p of same ch on center medallion, ch 2,
sl st at base of ch 2 for a p, (4 dc, p, 4 dc) in same ch 15 of side medallion.
Repeat from * on rnd 3 of center medallion to last ch 15. Then make 4 dc, p, 4
dc in last ch 15, ch 2, sl st in second free p from p joining on center
medallion, ch 2, sl st at base of ch 2 for a p, 4 dc in same ch 15, ch 2,
sl st in next free p of same ch on center medallion, ch 2, sl st for a p, 4 dc
in same ch 15, sl st in second sc on ring. Fasten off.
Make a second side medallion and join in same
manner at opposite side of center medallion. You now have the three medallions
which form center of doily and are ready for making the border.
Border
Rnd 1: Join thread in center p of one side
medallion, ch 14, sc in next p, * ch 14, sc over the p joining of same
medallion, (ch 14, sc in next p) 10 times, this brings you to a p joining of
opposite side medallion, ch 14, sc over p joining, (ch 14, sc in next p) 4
times, repeat from * around, sl st at base of first ch 14.
Rnd 2: Sl st in each of next 8 sts, * ch 14, sc in next
lp, repeat from * around, sl st at base of first ch 14.
Rnd 3: Repeat rnd 2.
Rnd 4: Repeat rnd 2, then fasten off.
Rnd 5: Make one ch st on hook in same manner
as when starting ch, then make (4 tr, ch 4, sl st in last tr for a p, 4 tr) in
a lp, ch 8, * (4 tr, a ch 4 p, 4 tr) in next lp, ch 8, repeat from * around,
end with ch 4, tr in top of first tr.
Rnd 6: * Ch 9, sc in 5th st from hook for a
p, ch 11, sc in 5th st from hook for a p, ch 4, sc in next ch lp, repeat from
* around, sl st at base of first ch 9. Fasten off.
Rnd 7: Join thread in center of ch lp, repeat
rnd 6. Fasten off.
Rnd 8: Join thread in center of a 2 p ch lp,
* ch 17, sc in center of next lp, repeat from * around, sl st at base of first ch 17. Fasten off.
Rnd 9: This rnd is composed of 16 side
medallions. Work in same manner as for side medallion to the third rnd, then work
in this manner: (4 dc in next lp, ch 2, sl st over ch in rnd
8, ch 2, sl st in top of last dc for a joined p) twice, (4 dc, p, 4 dc) in same
lp * (4 dc, p) 3 times in next lp, 4 dc in same lp, 4 dc in next lp, ch 2, sl st
in last p made, ch 2, sl st in top of last dc, (4 dc, p) twice in same lp, 4 dc
in same lp, repeat from * once, (4 dc, p, 4 dc) in next
lp, ch 2, sl st over next lp of rnd 8, ch 2, sl st in top of last dc for a
joined p, 4 dc in same lp of medallion, ch 2, make a joined p over same lp of
rnd 8, 4 dc in same lp of medallion, sl st in second sc. Fasten off.
Continue making medallions in same manner,
joining each medallion to 2 lps of rnd 8 and to the 2 adjacent p of previous
medallion. Be sure to join last medallion to first medallion in same manner as
other joinings.
Rnd 10: Join thread over p joining between
first and last medallions of previous rnd, * ch 10, sc in next p, ch 10, sc in
next p joining, (ch 10, sc in next p) 4 times, ch 10, sc in next p joining, ch
10, sc in next p, ch 5, 2 dtr in next p joining. Repeat from * around, end with
ch 5, dtr in same p joining at base of first ch 10, sl st in 5th st of first ch.
Rnd 11: (Ch 10, sc in next ch lp) 7 times, *
ch 5, sk the ch 5 lp, dtr in each of next 2 dtr, ch 5, sc in next ch 10 lp, (ch
10, sc in next ch 10 lp) 6 times. Repeat from * around, end with dtr in last
dtr, sl st in 5th st of first ch 10.
Rnd 12: Work in same manner as for rnd 11
except have one less ch 10 lp between 2 dtr. (Five ch 10 lps).
Rnd 13: * (Ch 10, sc in next ch lp) 5 times,
ch 10, sc in each of next 2 dtr, repeat from * around, end with sc in last dtr
and sl st at base of first ch.
Rnd 14: Sl st in each of next 3 sts, ch 3, 3
dc over ch lp, ch 4, sl st in top of last dc for a p, 4 dc over same lp, * ch 5,
(4 dc, a ch 4 p, 4 dc) over next lp, repeat from * around, end with ch 5, sl st
in top of ch 3. Fasten off.
Starch lightly. Stretch and pin in shape and
allow to dry before removing pins.
