Equipment: Paper for patterns; ruler; pencil; scissors; straight pins;
zigzag sewing machine.
Materials: Medium-weight cotton fabric, 36" wide, 1/3 yd. for
each place mat in colors illustrated or desired; 12 1/2" square for each
napkin (in matching or contrasting color); large and small pieces for designs.
Fusible web for bonding, 11" x 15" for each. sewing thread to match or
contrast with fabric sewn. Directions: Enlarge patterns below by
copying on paper ruled in 1" squares; complete half-pattern indicated by
long dash line. Short dash lines indicate where pieces are overlapped. Heavy
lines on pattern indicate cutting outlines. Dotted lines indicate lines, in
addition to outlines, which are to be satin stitched. Finer lines indicate lines
of the design to be plain stitched on machine.
For
each place mat, cut two pieces of fabric and one of bonding material, each
11" x 15". Place the fabric together, wrong sides facing, with bonding
material between. Following directions that come with bonding material, bond the
two pieces of fabric together. Zigzag-stitch edges of place mat. To make
stitching easier and edges neater, stitch around the edge twice with stitching
spaced a little instead of close stitching once. For napkin, make 1/2" hem
all around 12 1/2" square. Cut two of each design piece of fabric and one
of bonding material; bond together as for place mat. Pin design pieces on place
mat and napkins; using closely worked zigzag stitch, satin-stitch around edges
and along dotted lines to secure to place mat or napkin. plain stitch along
finer lines as indicated. Note: Before stitching Tulip to place mat,
stitch top edge between X's then leave this edge unstitched on place mat to make
pocket for napkin; fold napkin onto pocket as shown in photo above.
