Knit Patterns - Shimmering Gown
Sizes: Directions for size 10. Changes
for size 12, 14, and 16 are in parentheses. Body Bust Size: 32 1/2"
(34", 36", 38"). Blocked Bust Size: 35" (36
1/2", 38", 39 1/2").
Materials: Reynolds Constellation, 14
(15, 16, 17) 1 oz. balls, or other metallic yarn which will provide the gauge
measurements given below. Knitting needles Nos. 4 and 6. Crochet hook size E.
Four 3/8" plastic rings for buttons.
Gauge: 6 sts = 1"; 8 rows =
1" (stockinette st, No. 4 needles). Dress Length Note: Dress is
planned for 55 1/4" (55 3/4", 56 1/4", 56 3/4") length from
lower edge to back of neck. For longer gown, more yarn may be needed.
Eyelet Pattern: (worked on a
multiple
of 4 sts)
Row 1: (wrong side) With
No. 4 needle, * (k 1. p
1. k 1) in next st, p 3
tog, repeat from * across.
Row 2: With
No.6 needle, knit.
Row 3: With No. 4 needle,
* p 3 tog. (k 1, p 1, k 1) in next st, repeat from * across.
Row 4: Repeat row
2. Repeat these 4 rows for eyelet pat.
Dress Back: Beginning at lower edge,
with No. 4 needles, cast on 144 (148, 152, 156) sts. Work in stockinette st (k 1
row, p 1 row) for 1", end right side (hem). K next row on wrong side for
hemline. Work in stockinette st until piece measures 5" above hemline, end
right side. Check gauge; piece should measure 24" (24 2/3", 25
1/3", 26") wide. Work in eyelet pat for 3". * With No. 4 needles,
work in stockinette st for 1 1/2", end wrong side. Dec 4 sts evenly spaced
across next row - 140 (144, 148, 152) sts. Continue in stockinette st until
piece measures 3" above top of eyelet pat section, end rights side. Work in
eyelet pat row 3". Repeat from * once - 136 (140, 144, 148) sts. With No. 4
needles, working in stockinette st, dec 1 st each side of next row, then
every 1 1/2" 6 times - 122 (126, 130, 134) sts. Work even until piece
measures 30" above hemline or 10" less than desired length to
waistline, end p row. Dec 1 st each side of next row, then every 1" 5 times
- 110 (114, 118, 122) sts. Work even until piece measures 36 3/4" above
hemline, end p row. Dec 4 sts evenly spaced across next row, then every
3/4" 3 times - 94 (98, 102, 106) sts. Work even until piece measures
40" above hemline or desired length to waistline. Mark each side of last
row for waistline. Work in stockinette st until piece measures 2" above
waistline, end p row. Inc 1 st each side of next row - 96 (100, 104, 108) sts.
Work 4 rows even, end k row. Work in eyelet pat for 3". With No. 4 needles,
work in stockinette st until piece measures 1" above eyelet section, end p
row. Inc 4 sts evenly spaced across next row - 100 (104, 108, 112) sts. Work
even until piece measures 7 3/4" (8", 8 1/4", 8 1/2") above
marked row.
Shape Armholes: Bind off 3 sts at
beg of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every other row 3 times 88 (92, 96, 100)
sts. Work even until armholes measure 4 1/2" (4 3/4", 5", 5
1/4") above first bound off sts, end k row. Working in eyelet pat for
3", end wrong side. P next row on right side for tuning ridge. With No. 4
needles, beg with a p row, work in stockinette st for 3 rows. Bind off in k same
tension as sts.
Front: Work same as for back until
piece measures 2" above marked waistline row, end p row - 94 (98, 102, 106)
sts.
Next row: K 2 (4, 6, 8), inc 1 st in
next st, * k 9, inc 1 st in next st, repeat from * 8 times, end k 1 (4, 5, 7) -
104 (108, 112, 116) sts. Work even until piece measures 2 1/2" above marked
row, end k row. Work 4 rows even, end k row. Work in eyelet pat for
3". With No. 4 needles, work in stockinette st for 1", end p row.
Next row: K 2 (1, 3, 1), inc 1 st in
next st. * k 13 (14, 14, 15), inc 1 st in next st, repeat form * 6 times, end k
3 (1, 3, 2) - 112 (116, 120, 124) sts. work even until piece measures same as
back to underarm.
Shape Armholes: Bind off 6 sts at beg
of next 2 rows. Dec 1 st each side every other row 6 times - 88 (92, 96, 100)
sts. Complete same as back.
Finishing: Steam press stockinette st
sections lightly on wrong side; do not press eyelet sections. With backstitch
sew side seams.
Left Armhole Facing: From right side,
beg at upper edge of back armhole, with No.. 4 needles, pick up and k about 104
(106, 108, 110) sts around left armhole edge. K next row on wrong side for
turning ridge. K 1 row on wrong side for turning ridge. K 1 row, p 1 row, k 1
row. Bind off loosely in p.
Right Armhole Facing: Beg at top of
front armhole, work same as for left armhole facing.
Fold neck and armhole facings to wrong side;
hem in place.
Neck and Armhole Edging: From wrong
side, beg at top edge of left armhole, work 1 row sl st across upper edge of
back, around right armhole, sl st in first 2 sts on upper edge of front, ch 3
(buttonhole), sk next 2 sts, sl st in next st and in each of next 6 (7, 7, 8)
sts, ch 3, sk next 2 sts, sl st in next st and in each st to within last 13 (14,
14, 15) sts, ch 3, sk next 2 sts, sl st in next st and in each of next 6 (7, 7,
8) sts, ch 3, sk next 2 sts, sl st in each of next 2 sts, sl st around left
armhole. End off.
Buttons (make 2): Sc tightly around
plastic ring. Join with a sl st in first sc. Turn sc to center of ring; end off,
leaving a long end. Thread large eyed needle; gather sts tog at center. Sew
buttons to upper edge of back. Button shoulders.
