Materials: Worsted weight yarn (57) oz. (1,620 grams, 3,825
yds); Straight knitting needles, size 8 (5.00mm) or size
needed for gauge; Crochet hook size H; Yarn needle

Gauge: In stockinette stitch, 18 stitches and 24
rows = 4"
This afghan is done in squares. (20 squares)
Cast on 54 sts.
SSK=With yarn to the back of work, separately slip two stitches as if
to knit. Insert left needle to the front through both stitches. Knit together.
Row 1: AND ALL WRONG SIDE Rows: Purl across.
Row 2: (Right side): * K2, K2 tog, K1, YO, K1, SSK See above); repeat
from * 5 times more, K6: 48 sts.
Row 4: K1, K2 tog, * K1, (YO, K1) twice, SSK, K2 tog; repeat from * 5 times more, K1,
YO, K2.
Row 6: K3, YO, K3, * YO, K1, SSK, K1, YO, K3; repeat from * across: 55 sts.
Row 8: K5, K2 tog, K1, YO, K1, SSK, * K2, K2 tog, K1, YO, K1, SSK; repeat from * 4
times more, K4: 49 sts.
Row 10: K4, * K2 tog, K1, (YO, K1) twice, SSK; repeat from * 5 times more, K3.
Row 12: K3, K2 tog, * K1, YO, K3, YO, K1, K2 tog; repeat from * 5 times more, K2: 54
sts.
Repeat Rows 1-12 until square measures approximately 12" from cast on edge, ending
by working Row 12.
Bind off all sts leaving last loop on needle.
Edging: Drop loop from needle, insert crochet hook
in loop, turn; work 3 sc in each corner and 48 sc evenly spaced across each side; join
with slip st to first sc, finish off.
Assembly: Afghan is
assembled by joining 5 completed squares into 4 vertical strips and then by joining
strips. Lay out squares in desired order. Join squares as follows: With right sides
together, insert yarn needle from right to left through front loop of first square and
back loop of second square. Bring the needle around and insert it from right to left
through the next loop on both squares. Continue in this manner, keeping the sewing yarn
fairly loose.
Border: With right side
facing, join yarn with slip st in any corner; ch 1, sc evenly around Afghan working 3 sc
in each corner; join with slip st to first sc, finish off.
