Kids craft project for Growth Tape
This is a great project for Boy Scout or Girl Scout
Troops to make as gifts. The tape is attached to a wall, and the child
stands beside it to measure and mark his or
her height and the date. The tape is a decorative record of growth and can
be used until the child is 5 feet tall.
Materials:
One 60"-long measuring tape
(preferably new, made of brightly colored cloth or plastic), white glue,
pencil.
For wood tape: A strip of wood 60" (5’) long by
5" wide, hand saw, sandpaper, acrylic or enamel paint and brush.
For Felt
or Fabric tape: A strip of felt or other fabric 60" (5’) long
by 5" wide, scissors, needle and thread, pinking shears (optional),
fabric or felt scraps, iron.
Instructions:
1. To make a wooden grow tape, measure a board 60"
long by 5" wide. Ask an adult to help you cut board with saw.
Use sandpaper to smooth all rough edges. Paint the wood a solid color all
over.
2. To make a felt or fabric tape, cut your material
60" x 5". If material is not long enough, cut shorter strips and
sew them together. Iron seams flat on back side. To keep fabric from
unraveling at the edges, cut with pinking shears, or fold under and sew a 1/2"
hem around all sides. Iron flat. Cut felt with regular scissors
and do not hem.
3. Set your wood or fabric or felt flat on the floor, right
side up. Glue the tape measure onto the left edge, with the
60" mark at the top. Leave a plain 2" space to the right of the
tape measure where the child can write in height and date with a felt-tip
pen. Decorate the rest of the area with painted designs or cutout and
glued-on felt or fabric shapes.
