Dress Up Socks: (Size 1 year)

Materials: 1 ball of baby yarn (color of choice); Double Pointed knitting needles, 2 pairs, Size 0.

Gauge: 27 rounds = 2"

Cuff: Cast on 40 sts on 3 needles (12-12-16). Join, work k2, ribbing for 1 1/2". Work 1 more round of ribbing, increasing 1 st in center of every k rib, by picking up and knitting the loop between the 2 k sts (50 sts).

Pattern—First round~* Yo, slip 1 st as to k, k 2 tog, pass slip st over the 2 tog, y o, p 2; repeat from * to end. 2nd, 3rd and 4th round~* K 3, p 2; repeat from * to end. Repeat these 4 rounds until leg measures 3 1/4 ins, from cuff, end with 4th pattern round.

H—K 28 sts for heel to 1 needle; slip the next 22 sts to 2 needles for instep. Turn, slip 1, p to end, turn; slip 1, k to end. Repeat these 2 rows 7 times (17 rows for heel).

To turn heel—Slip 1, p 15, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; slip 1, k 5, slip, k and pass, k 1, turn; slip 1, p 6, p 2 tog, p 1, turn; slip 1, k 7, slip, k and pass, k 1, turn; continue in this way to work 1 st more before dec. on every row until all sts are worked; 16 sts left on heel needle.

Foot—With heel needle, pick up and k 9 sts on side of heel; beginning and ending, p 2, work as for first pattern row across the 22 instep sts; with another needle, pick up and k 9 sts on other side of heel and to same needle k the first 8 heel sts; 56 sts. Continue lace pattern on instep sts. Work 1 round even. Next round—K to within 3 sts of end of first needle, k 2 tog, k 1; work instep sts; on 3rd needle, k 1, slip, k and pass, k to end. Repeat last 2 rounds 5 times; 44 sts. Work even, continuing pattern on instep sts until foot measures 3 3/4 ins, from tip of heel or desired length allowing 1 1/4 ins, for toe.

Toe—Discontinue lace pattern. K 1 round. First dec. round~~* K 9, k 2 tog; repeat from * 8 times. K 1 round even. 2nd dec. round~* K 8, k 2 tog; repeat from * 3 times. Continue in this way to dec. 4 sts every 2nd round until there are 12 sts in round. K 2 tog 6 times. Break off, draw end through remaining 6 sts twice. Fasten off. Steam

Size: 1 to 2 years

1 ball baby yarn or sock - sport yarn 1-skein (color of choice)

2 pairs, size 1, double pointed knitting needles

Gauge: Size 1 needles -- 17 sts = 2"

Size: 2 to 3 Years

Sport Yarn, 1 ball; or Fleisher’s Sweater and Stocking Yarn, 1 skein. 

Double Pointed Needles, 2 pairs, Size 2.

Instructions are written for smaller size, changes for larger size are in parentheses.

 C—Cast on 36 sts, join, work k 1, p 1 ribbing for 20 rounds.

 L—K plain until 3˝ (4˝) ins, from beginning, or desired length.

 H—Slip the next 16 sts to 2 needles for instep. On remaining 20 sts work heel. First row—Slip 1, p to end. 2nd row—Slip 1, k to end. Repeat these 2 rows 6 times (14 rows for heel).

Turn heel as follows: Slip 1, p 11, p 2 tog, p 1; turn, slip 1, k 5, slip, k and pass, k 1; turn, slip 1, p 6, p 2 tog, p 1; turn, slip 1, k 7, slip, k and pass, k 1; turn, slip 1, p 8, p 2 tog, p 1; turn, slip 1, k 9, slip, k and pass, k 1; turn, slip 1, p 10, p 2 tog; turn, slip 1, k 10, slip, k and pass. There will be 12 sts on heel needle, divide them on 2 needles (6 sts on each needle).

 Foot—With the last heel needle pick up and k 8 sts on side of heel, k 16 instep sts to 1 needle, pick up and k 8 sts on other side of heel, to the same needle k 6 heel sts, end at center of sole (44 sts). K 1 round even. Next round

—K to within 3 sts of end of first needle, k 2 tog, k 1; k instep sts; on 3rd needle k 1, slip, k and pass, k to end. Repeat last 2 rounds 3 times (36 sts). K even until 4 (5) ins., or to desired length from tip of heel, allowing 1 (1 1/4) ins, for toe.

 Toe—Counting from center of sole, place 9 sts on first needle, 18 sts on 2nd needle and 9 st on 3rd needle. First dec. round—K to within 3 sts of end of first needle, k 2 tog, k 1; on 2nd needle k 1, slip, k and pass, k to within 3 sts of end of needle, k 2 tog, k 1; on 3rd needle k 1, slip, k and pass, k to end. K 1 round even. Repeat last 2 rounds until there are 12 sts in round. K 2 sts tog 6 times. Break off, draw end through remaining 6 sts twice. Fasten off. Steam.
