Free Knitting Patterns - Wrap-Around Bathrobe

Directions are for "one size fits
all". Coat requires about 21 ounces rust, 2 ounces each of apricot, light
green and gold 4-ply worsted weight yarn. (This pattern uses the colors
mentioned above but you may use any combination of colors you desire) Use number
8 circular knitting needle (not less than 20 nor more than 24 inches long), 5
stitch holders (one approximately 10 inches, two 5 inches, two small stitch
holders or large safety pins).
Abbreviations: k (knit) p (purl) mc (increase) dec (decrease) tog (together)
st (stitch) sl (slip) psso (pass slip stitch over).
Gauges: 4 sts equal 1 inch 5 rows equal 1 inch
Coat: Starting at bottom with rust, cast on
180 sts, do not join. Work 10 rows in garter st (k each row). Continue working
garter st throughout with rust, for first and last 8 sts of each row (border).
Work 8 garter sts for border, start
stockinette (k one row, p 1 row), continue for six rows, end with p row and
garter st border.
Green Stripe: Work 8 garter sts in rust, join
green (do not fasten off rust), k to border, join another ball of rust, continue
in garter st to end. Work seven more rows in stockinette throughout, except for
border.
Next 2 Rows: Work in rust.
Gold Stripe: Work same as green stripe.
Next 2 Rows: Work in rust.
Apricot Stripe: Work same as green and gold
stripes.
Using rust, continue in stockinette (except border) until coat measures 14
inches or desired length, end with p row.
Neck Shaping—Row 1: Work 8 garter sts, k 1,
sl 1, k 1, psso (first dec at right neck edge), k to last 3 sts before border, k
2 tog, k 1 (first dec at left neck edge), work 8 garter sts for border.
Dec one st each side every 3 rows 12 times
more—154 sts, end with p row.
Place first 8 sts on small st holder (right
border), next 30 sts on larger st holder (right front), next 78 sts on largest
st holder (back), next 30 sts on holder (left front), next 8 sts on holder (left
border).
Sleeves & Yoke: Left Sleeve; With rust,
cast on 90 sts. Work 10 rows in garter st. Work 6 rows in stockinette, end with
p row.
Green Stripe: Work 8 rows in stockinette.
Next 2 Rows: Work in rust.
Gold Stripe: Work 7 rows. On 8th row dec 5 sts
evenly across row—85 sts.
Next 2 Rows: Work in rust.
Apricot Stripe: Work 7 rows. On 8th row dec 5
sts evenly across row—80 sts.
Work even until sleeve measures 16 inches or
desired length, end with p row.
Join Body of Sweater to Yoke:
Fold left front of coat over back. Replace
left front st holder so points of back st holder and left front st holder meet
under left arm.
Row 1: Sl first st from back st holder to
knitting needle. K the sl st and first st on k needle tog, k across to last st
on row, k last st on row and first st on left front st holder tog.
Row 2: P next st on left front st holder with
first st on k needle tog, p across to last st on needle, p last st with next st
on back st holder tog.
Note: A circular needle more than 24 inches
long would not be able to contain these sts at this point.
Repeat these two rows for 4 inches, end with p
row.
Yoke Neck Shaping: Continue picking up sts
from back and front at holders as established.
Row 1: K across 40 sts, bind off 28 sts, k remaining 12 sts
(left front yoke).
Row 2: P across to last 2 sts of the 12 sts, p last 2 sts tog.
Row 3: K first 2 sts tog and k across.
Repeat rows 2 and 3 of front yoke until one st is left, bind
off.
Neck Back: Join yarn and p across 40 sts.
Continue in stockinette (remembering to join back to yoke as established) for 11
inches, end with p row.
Next Row: K across 40 sts. Push these 40 sts back on needle,
fasten off yarn.
Right Front Yoke: Cast on 2 sts. Replace right
front st holder so point of st holder will be on same side as border.
Row 1: K first st on right front st holder and first st on needle tog, k 1, cast 1 st on.
Row 2: Cast on 1 st, p across row, remembering to p last st on
row and next st on right front st holder tog.
Work these 2 rows until you have 12 sts, end with k row.
Next Row: P across 12 sts, cast on 28 sts, continue across 40
sts on needle— 80sts.
Proceed in established manner until right front st holder and
back st holder are empty (about 4 inches from cast on 28
sts).
Right Sleeve: Continuing
on from back yoke, work to correspond with left sleeve. Remember to inc 5
sts evenly in first row of apricot stripe (85 sts), inc 5 sts evenly in first
row of gold stripe—90 sts.
Right Border: Place sts
from right border st holder on k needle. Continue these 8 garter sts until
border is 17 inches longer. Place 8 sts back on st holder.
Left Border: Same as right border. Weave border sts tog at center back.
To Weave Sts: With wrong sides
together and using threaded tapestry needle, * pass needle and yarn through
first st of front holder as if to p, but leave st on holder, pass yarn through
first st of back holder as if to p, sl first st off, pass through second st on
back holder as if to k, leave st on holder, draw yarn through, sl 2nd st off,
repeat form * until all sts are joined. Fasten off.
Finishing: Sew border around neck (lap border
slightly over yoke), easing in yoke. Sew sleeve seams. Block coat.
Belt: Cast on 8 sts. Work in garter st until
belt is 50 inches or desired length. Bind off.
