Coat: Starting at bottom with rust, cast on 180 sts, do not join. Work 10 rows in garter st (k each row). Continue working garter st throughout with rust, for first and last 8 sts of each row (border).

Work 8 garter sts for border, start stockinette (k one row, p 1 row), continue for six rows, end with p row and garter st border.

Green Stripe: Work 8 garter sts in rust, join green (do not fasten off rust), k to border, join another ball of rust, continue in garter st to end. Work seven more rows in stockinette throughout, except for border.

Next 2 Rows: Work in rust.

Neck Shaping-Row 1: Work 8 garter sts, k 1, sl 1, k 1, psso (first dec at right neck edge), k to last 3 sts before border, k 2 tog, k 1 (first dec at left neck edge), work 8 garter sts for border.

Dec one st each side every 3 rows 12 times more-154 sts, end with p row.

Place first 8 sts on small st holder (right border), next 30 sts on larger st holder (right front), next 78 sts on largest st holder (back), next 30 sts on holder (left front), next 8 sts on holder (left border).

Step 3: The Next Step

Sleeves & Yoke: Left Sleeve; With rust, cast on 90 sts. Work 10 rows in garter st. Work 6 rows in stockinette, end with p row.

Green Stripe: Work 8 rows in stockinette.

Next 2 Rows: Work in rust.

Next 2 Rows: Work in rust.

Apricot Stripe: Work 7 rows. On 8th row dec 5 sts evenly across row-80 sts.

Work even until sleeve measures 16 inches or desired length, end with p row.

Join Body of Sweater to Yoke:

Fold left front of coat over back. Replace left front st holder so points of back st holder and left front st holder meet under left arm.

Row 1: Sl first st from back st holder to knitting needle. K the sl st and first st on k needle tog, k across to last st on row, k last st on row and first st on left front st holder tog.

Row 2: P next st on left front st holder with first st on k needle tog, p across to last st on needle, p last st with next st on back st holder tog.

Note: A circular needle more than 24 inches long would not be able to contain these sts at this point.

Repeat these two rows for 4 inches, end with p row.

Step 4: The Next Step 2

Yoke Neck Shaping: Continue picking up sts from back and front at holders as established.

Row 1: K across 40 sts, bind off 28 sts, k remaining 12 sts (left front yoke).

Row 2: P across to last 2 sts of the 12 sts, p last 2 sts tog.

Row 3: K first 2 sts tog and k across.

Repeat rows 2 and 3 of front yoke until one st is left, bind off.

Neck Back: Join yarn and p across 40 sts. Continue in stockinette (remembering to join back to yoke as established) for 11 inches, end with p row.

Next Row: K across 40 sts. Push these 40 sts back on needle, fasten off yarn.

Right Front Yoke: Cast on 2 sts. Replace right front st holder so point of st holder will be on same side as border.

Row 1: K first st on right front st holder and first st on needle tog, k 1, cast 1 st on.

Row 2: Cast on 1 st, p across row, remembering to p last st on row and next st on right front st holder tog.

Work these 2 rows until you have 12 sts, end with k row.

Next Row: P across 12 sts, cast on 28 sts, continue across 40 sts on needle- 80sts.

Proceed in established manner until right front st holder and back st holder are empty (about 4 inches from cast on 28 sts).

Step 5: Finishing Up

Right Sleeve: Continuing on from back yoke, work to correspond with left sleeve. Remember to inc 5 sts evenly in first row of apricot stripe (85 sts), inc 5 sts evenly in first row of gold stripe-90 sts.

Right Border: Place sts from right border st holder on k needle. Continue these 8 garter sts until border is 17 inches longer. Place 8 sts back on st holder.

Left Border: Same as right border. Weave border sts tog at center back.

To Weave Sts: With wrong sides together and using threaded tapestry needle, * pass needle and yarn through first st of front holder as if to p, but leave st on holder, pass yarn through first st of back holder as if to p, sl first st off, pass through second st on back holder as if to k, leave st on holder, draw yarn through, sl 2nd st off, repeat form * until all sts are joined. Fasten off.

Finishing: Sew border around neck (lap border slightly over yoke), easing in yoke. Sew sleeve seams. Block coat.

Belt: Cast on 8 sts. Work in garter st until belt is 50 inches or desired length. Bind off.
