Free Knitting Patterns - Child's Fringe Cape
Materials: Directions are for a size to fit 18 months to
2 years with any changes in parentheses for 3-4 and 5-6 year sizes. Cape takes
about 10 (12, 16) ounces knitting worsted, Susan Bates size 8 standard knitting
needles, size 8 circular 29-inch needle, size H crochet hook, and one small
button.
Abbreviations: k (knit) p (loop)
p (purl) tog (together)
sl (slip) inc (increase)
St (stitch) dec (decrease)
sc (single crochet) rnd (round)
Gauge: 5 sts equal 1 inch
Pattern: Cape; Starting at neck edge, cast 54 sts on
circular needle.
Row 1: P 7, inc one st in next st, place marker on needle, p 2 (seam
sts). marker, inc one st in next st, p 4, inc one
st in next st, marker, p2 (seam sts). marker, inc one st in next st, p 16, inc
one st in next st, marker, p 2 (seam sts), marker, inc one st in next st, p 4,
inc one st in next st, marker, p 2 (seam sts), marker, inc one st in next st, p
7—8 sts inc, turn.
Row 2: (Right Side) * K to one st before marker,
inc in next st, sl marker, k 2 seam sts, sl marker, inc in next st, repeat from
* across row, turn.
Note: Throughout, keep original sts in their
patterns as established and work inc sts into more patterns.
Row 3: K 2, * p 2, k 2, repeat from * across,
turn.
Row 4: P 2, * k 2 tog but do not remove these
sts from left hand needle—k through the first of the 2 sts and then sl both sts off the left hand needle
(twist made and no inc or dec made) p 2, repeat from * across, turn.
Row 5: P each st, inc one st in sts before and
after Seam sts, turn
Row 6: Repeat row 2.
Row 7: * K 2, p 2, repeat from * to first
marker, p 2 seam sts, (p 2, k 2) to next marker, p 2 seam sts. repeat from * across, turn.
Note: In row 7 adjustment was
made so seam and other sts will come out in pattern; in same manner adjust rows
whenever necessary.
Rows 8, 9: Repeat rows 4.

Repeat rows 2 through 9 until there are 142
sts on needle, ending on pattern row 5.
Joining Rnd: K 2
tog, work in pattern as established, continuing to inc at seam sts. and ending k
2 tog—140 sts. Place a marker for center front. Do not turn.
Rnd 1: P 1, k 2, * p 2, k 2, repeat from * to
first marker; k the seam sts, k 2, (p 2, k 2) across, continuing to work pattern
as established and to k the seam sts.
Rnd 2: P 1, twist on next 2 sts, p 2. twist on
next 2 sts, repeat across, following pattern as established and k seam sts.
Rnds 3, 4: K across, inc as established.
Rnd 5: P 1, * k 2. p 2. repeat from * across,
ending p 1.
Rnd 6: Repeat rnd 2.
Rnds 7, 8: K around, inc as established.
Repeat last 8 ends until piece measures 5 (6,
7˝ (inches from beginning.
Form Slits: Work in
pattern as established until 15 (17, 19) sts before center front
marker. Using straight needles, work in pattern st on next 30 (34, 38) center
front sts only, working back and forth on straight needles.
Fringe: Sc around
lower edge. Using 1˝-inch piece of cardboard make 1 row of lp st, holding
cardboard to wrong side of work. To Make Loop St: Holding cardboard even
with work, insert hook in next sc, wind yarn around cardboard from back to
front, yarn over hook, draw through st, yarn over and draw through first lp,
yarn over and draw through 2 lps. Work a lp st in each sc.
Neck Finishing: Sc around neck opening
and around neck, making a lp buttonhole at neck edge of opening. Holding
cardboard at right side of work, work lp st around neck. Sew on button.
Finishing: Sew the 4 cast on and bound -off sts over
center section to finish slits. Block.
