Free Knitting Patterns - Toddler's Dress

Front of dress has a rounded neck and no opening. Back, with button down opening, is shown in photo above. Directions are for size 9 months to 1 year with any changes in parentheses for 18 months to 2 years. It takes about 4 ounces, 3-ply Orion sport yarn and one 10-gram ball of white angora yarn for trim. Use one pair each sizes 1 and 4 standard knitting needles, steel crochet hook number 2, one yarn holder and 2 (3) small pearl buttons.

Abbreviations: k (knit) Sc (single crochet) p (purl) dec (decrease) St (stitch) inc (increase) tog (together) 0 (yarn over) Sl (Slip) psso (pass slip stitch over).

Gauge: 5 sts equal 1 inch on size 4 needles; 7 sts equal 1 inch on size 1 needles

Pattern St: (Cast on 18 sts for sample swatch.)

Row 1: * K 2 tog (a dec), k 2, 0 (an inc, k 1,0 (an inc, k 2, sl 1, k 1, psso (a dec), repeat from * across.

Row 2: P each st (do not drop any 0’s).

Repeat these two rows for pattern.

Front—Skirt: With size 4 needles, cast on 99 (108) sts. Work pattern rows 1 and 2 until skirt measures 9½ (10½) inches.

Yoke: Change to size 1 needles and work in stockinette (k 1 row, p 1 row).

Row 1: K across, dec 23 (24) sts spaced across needle (about every 4th st)—76 (84) sts.

Row2: P each st.

Row 3: K across, dec 22 (24) sts spaced across needle (about every third st)—54 (60) sts.

Row 4: P each St.

Armhole Shaping

Row 5: Bind off first 3 sts on needle, k across.

Row 6: Bind off first 3 sts on needle, p across—48 (54) sts.

Continue working in stockinette until yoke measures 2 (2½) inches, end with a p row.

Neck and Armhole Shaping

Row 1: K 19 (21) sts, sl these on holder; bind off 10 (12) sts, k remaining 19 (21) sts for left half of yoke.

Row 2: P each st.

Row 3: K 2 tog at neck edge, k across.

Row 4: P each st.

Repeat rows three and four 3 (4) more times, leaving 15 (16) sts on needle at shoulder seam.

Shoulder Shaping: Bind off first 8 (9) sts at armhole edge, k across.

Last Row: Bind off remaining sts. To work left side of yoke, join yarn at armhole edge, work as for right side of yoke, but reverse placement of shaping.

Back—Skirt and Yoke: Same as front through rows 1, 2 and 3 of yoke— 54(60) sts, end on k row.

Next Row: P 27 (30) sts and place on holder, p remaining sts (this will form slit for button back).

Armhole Shaping—(Right Back)

 Row 5: Bind off first 3 sts, k remaining 24 (27) sts, right-hand side of yoke-back. Work in stockinette for 3 (3½) inches, end with p row.

Neck Shaping—(Right Side)—

Row 1: K 19 (21) sts, bind off last 5 (6) sts.

Row 2: P each st.

Row 3: K to last 2 sts, k 2 tog.

Repeat last 2 rows 3 (4) more times— 15 (16) sts remaining for shoulder.

Finish shoulder seam same as right front yoke, fasten off.

Remove sts from holder, join yarn at armhole edge. Finish to correspond to other side.

Sleeves: With size 1 needles cast on 45 sts. Work in skirt pattern for 6 (8) rows, end with p row. Continue with size 1 needles but change to stockinette.

Row 7 (9): K 2 tog across needle, k last single st—23 sts.

Row 8(10): P each st.

Row 9 (11):—Inc Row: Inc 1 st in each st on needle. K st in usual way without allowing it to sl from needle, k into same st through back of lp, sl both sts from needle—46 sts.

Continue in stockinette for 5 (7) more rows.

Row 15 (19): Bind off first 3 sts, k across.

Row 16 (20): Bind off first 3 sts, p across—40 sts.

Row 17 (21): K 2 tog, k across to last 2 sts, k 2 tog.

Row 18(22): P each st.

Repeat last 2 rows for 8 (10) more times.

Last Row: K 2 tog, bind this st off and bind off across to last 2 sts, k 2 tog, bind this st off, fasten off.

Sew pieces together. With sport yarn, beginning at bottom of back-slit, sc around neck opening and slit, chaining 3 small button loops on right hand side. With white angora, sc scalloped edges. Sew on buttons.
