Free Knitting Patterns - Waffle Trim Baby Ensemble
 
Instructions are for 3 to 6 months size.
Materials: Baby
Yarn 7 (1-oz. skeins white); Baby Yarn 1 (1-ounce skein blue). 2 yards satin
ribbon for coat and bonnet; 1 yard narrow ribbon for booties; 2 buttons; 1 pair
straight knitting needles #3.
Stitches: Stockinette st.: K 1 row, P 1 row; Garter st. K back and forth;
Ribbing: K 1, P 1.
Waffle st.: Work with blue and white yarn. 1
st row: (White Yarn) K on right side of work. 2nd row: (White Yarn) K
on wrong side of work. 3rd row: (White Yarn) P on right side of work. 4th
row: (White Yarn) K on wrong side. 5th row: * K 4 sts. with blue
yarn, sl. 2 white sts. Repeat from *. 6th row: P blue sts., sl. white
sts. 7th row: As 5th row. 8th row: As 6th row. Repeat from 1st
row, staggering squares.
Jacket
Front: Cast on 64
sts. Work 8 rows in garter St. with white yarn, then work in following manner:
6 sts. in garter St. (white yarn), 58 sts. in
waffle St. (blue and white yarns) until you have completed 3 rows of blue
squares. Then work 6 sts. in garter st. (white), 15 sts. in waffle st., and 43
sts. in stockinette st. (white). When work measures 5 1/8" from bottom shape
armhole: Bind off at arm edge 4 sts., then 2 sts. Work even for 1½". Next
row: Work 37 stockinette sts. 2 or 3 at a time so that only 16 sts. of
stockinette st. remain. Work yoke in waffle st., always working 6 sts. in garter
st. for border. After 2nd row of squares in waffle st. has been completed place
8 first sts. on stitch holder.
Shape neckline bind off 3 sts. 3 times
at neck edge. 20 sts. then remain on needle. When armhole measures 4" shape
shoulder: Bind off 10 sts. 2 times, starting at arm edge. Work other side to
correspond.
Back: Cast on 94 sts. Work 8 rows in garter st. Then make a band in waffle
st. as for fronts.
Change to stockinette st. and work even up to armholes. Shape armholes: Bind
off 4 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then 2 sts. at beg. of 2 following rows. Then
at yoke’s height, work 1 K row, decreasing 22 sts. across row so that only 60
sts. remain on needle. K 1. row on wrong side, P 1 row on right side, K 1 row on
wrong side and change back to stockinette St. When armholes are 4", shape
shoulders: Bind off 10 sts. twice on each side. Hold 20 center sts. on
stitch holder.
Sleeves: Cast on
50 sts. Work in garter st. for 8 rows. Then work a band in waffle st. as for
front. Change to stockinette st., increasing 3 sts. on each side. When sleeve
measures 6 1/4" from bottom, bind off 2 sts. at beg. of each row until only 8
sts. remain. Bind off.
Finishing: Sew
shoulder and side seams. Sew sleeves and attach to bodice.
Collar: Pick up 8 sts.
of left front held on stitch holder, pick up sts. along neckline, pick up 20
sts. of back, pick up sts. along neckline on right front and 8 sts.
Rompers:
Start at bottom. Cast on 20 sts. and work in
stockinette st. for 4 rows. Then add on each side (for legs) 4 sts. 10 times and
5 sts. once (110 sts.). Work even for ¾" and start decreases in following
manner: Work 31 sts., dec. 1 st. (sl. 1 st., K 1, pass slipped st. over K st.),
work 1 st., work 2 tog., work 38 sts., dec. 1 st., work 1 st., work 2 tog., and
work 31 last sts. of row. Repeat these decreases 6 times, 5 rows apart. After
6th group of decreases work even in stockinette st. for 3 rows and change to
waffle St. Work 5 rows of. squares but after 5th row change to ribbing omitting
the last 3 rows of reverse stockinette st. Dec. 16 sts. across first row of
ribbing in following manner: work 2 sts. tog. on each side and take all white
sts. 2 at a time, 70 sts. then remain on needle. Work even in ribbing for 1
3/8" and bind off. Work back in same manner adding shoulder straps. When
waistline ribbing is completed bind off 13 sts., hold 12 sts. on stitch holder
for 1st strap. Bind off 20 sts., hold 12 sts. on stitch holder for 2nd strap.
Bind off last 13 sts. of row. Work each strap separately in ribbing for
10¼". Form buttonhole (bind off 2 sts. Next row: Cast on 2 sts. over
previously bound-off sts.) Then work 2 tog. at beg. of each row until no sts.
remain.
Finishing: Sew
side seams. Pick up 70 sts. around each leg and work even for 5 rows in
stockinette st. Next row: 2 tog., yo, 2 tog., yo, and so on until end of row.
Work 4 more rows and bind off. Sew crotch, hem in leg openings, folding back in
center of openwork row. Sew buttons on belt in front.
Booties:
Start at top. Cast on 42 sts. Work in garter
st. (white) for 6 rows. Make 3 complete rows of squares (waffle st.). Work 2
rows in stockinette st. (white). Next row: Work in stockinette st. but work 2
tog., yo, every 3 sts. Work 4 more rows in stockinette st. Place 16 sts. on each
side on stitch holders. Work on 10 center sts. in stockinette st. for 18 rows
(for instep of booties). Place on stitch holder. Pick up first group of 16 sts.,
pick up 12 sts. on right side of instep, pick up the 10 center sts., pick up 12
sts. on left side of instep, and pick up the last group of 16 sts. Work all sts.
(66 sts.) in reverse stockinette st. for 5 rows. Then work in waffle st. for 4
rows (starting with 1 white st. and 4 blue sts.). End with 5 rows in reverse
stockinette st. Place 28 sts. on free needles on each side and work the 10
center sts. in garter st. (sole) working tog. at the end of each row, the 10th
st. and the corresponding st. on free needle. Work in this manner until only 5
sts. remain on each side. Bind off.
Finishing: Sew bootie in back.
Pass ribbon through openwork at ankle.
Bonnet:
Start at outer edge. Cast on 104 sts. with
white yarn. Work even in garter st. for 6 rows. Change to waffle st. After 4th
row of blue squares, work in stockinette st. (white) for 4 rows. Next row: dec.
8 sts. across row. Work even in stockinette st. for 4". Bind off 8 sts. 4
times on each side. Place 32 center sts. on st. holder. Pick up 32 sts on
previously bound-off sts. on right side, pick up the 32 sts. just placed on st.
holder, pick up 32 sts. on previously bound-off sts. on left side. Work these
96 sts. in reverse stockinette st. for 3 rows. Bind off 32 sts. on each side and
work even on 32 center sts. in stockinette st. for 3". Start decreases on K
row: K 10 sts., bind off 1 st., K 8 sts., K 2 tog., K 10. Return row: P. Next
row: K 10, bind off 1, K 6, K 2 tog., K 10. Repeat these decreases until only 21
sts. remain. Work even until crown is same length as sides. Bind off.
Finishing: Sew crown to sides. Work 2 rows in
single crochet around bottom of bonnet. To form scallop of brim, draw together
(in back of work) rows of white reverse stockinette st. after 3rd, 7th, 11th,
and 15th blue squares. Sew ribbon for chin straps.
