Free Knitting Patterns - Knit Baby Set

Doreen Knitting Books, Volume 100, in 1950.

Size: Infants to 6 months

Materials: YARN: 2-ounces of White 3-ply Baby Yarn. 2-ounces of Pink 3-ply Baby Yarn. Needles: 1-pr. #6 single pointed.

Gauge: 13-sts to an inch. 12 rows to an inch.

Sweater: Using the #6 needle and the pink yarn, cast on 77 sts. Work 7 rows in garter stitch (knit every row). Next row: * Knit 10 sts, increase 1 st in the next st, repeat from * 5 times more; knit to end of row (83 sts). Tie in white yarn. From now on carry the yarn not in use along the edge. PATTERN: ROW 1: (Using the white): Knit 2, * slip 1 stitch as if to purl, knit 5 sts; repeat from * across row, ending with k 2. ROW 2: Purl 2 sts, * slip 1 st, purl 5 sts; repeat from * across row. ROW 3: Repeat row 1. ROW 4: Repeat row 2. ROW 5: (Using the Pink): Knit across all sts. ROW 6: Knit across all sts. Repeat these 6 rows for the pattern. Work until the piece measures about 5 inches, ending with row 4 completed. Break yarn. Using the pink yarn, cast on 27 sts onto a free needle for sleeve; with the same needle, knit across sweater; cast on 27 sts at the end of this row for 2nd sleeve. Note: After the sleeve sts are cast on, your pattern starts and ends with k 5. Continue working in the pattern until there are 4 white rows in the 6th pattern from where you cast on the sts for the sleeve. Using the pink, knit across next row. Next row: Bind off all sts loosely.

RIGHT FRONT: Using the #6 needles and the pink yarn, cast on 35 sts. Work 7 rows in garter stitch (knit every row). Next row: Knit across, increasing 3 sts evenly spaced across row (38 sts). Tie in white yarn and work in the PATTERN: ROW 1: (Using the white yarn): * Knit 5 sts, slip 1 st as if to purl; repeat from * across row ending with k 2. ROW 2: Purl 2 sts, * slip 1, purl 5; repeat from * across row. ROW 3: Repeat row 1. ROW 4: Repeat row 2. ROW 5: (Using the pink yarn): Knit across row. ROW 6: Knit across all sts. Repeat these 6 rows for the pattern. Work until there are the same number of patterns up to the underarm as on the back, ending with the 5th row completed. At the end of this row, cast on 27 sts with the pink yarn. Knit back. Keeping the pattern, work until 4 white rows have been completed in the 4th pattern on the sleeve. NECK SHAPING: At the beginning of row 5, bind off 10 sts, knit to end of row. Knit back. Tie white yarn in. Keeping the pattern even, decrease 1 st at the neck edge every other row 6 times. Bind off all sts on the 6th row.

FRONT BORDER: Using the pink yarn, with the right side of the work facing you and starting at the lower edge of the front; pick up and knit 1 st in each ridge of the border, * 3 sts in the next white block, 1 st in the next ridge, 2 sts in the next white block, 1 st in the next ridge; repeat from * along straight edge of front (54 sts). Knit 6 rows. Bind off all sts on the next row.

LEFT FRONT: Work as the right front until the 4 rows of white have been completed in the 10th pattern. Break yarns. Using the pink yarn, cast on 27 sts onto a free needle for sleeve; with the same needle knit across front.

Next row: Knit across all sts with pink. Now continue to finish this front to correspond to the right one.

FINISHING: Sew both fronts along the shoulder line.

NECK BAND: With the right side of the work facing you and using the pink yarn, pick up and knit 83 sts around the neck edge. Knit 6 rows in garter st. Bind off all sts.

CUFFS: With the right side of the work facing you and using the pink yarn, pick up and knit 44 sts across the sleeve edge. Knit 6 rows. Bind off all sts. Sew underarm seams.

Booties: Using the pink yarn, cast on 37 sts. Knit 7 rows in garter st. Next row: Knit across, increasing 4 sts evenly spaced apart (41 sts). Now work in the pattern, starting and ending row with knit 5 sts. Work until there are 4 white rows completed in the 4th pattern. Break off white yarn. With the pink, knit across next row. Beading row: Knit 1, * yarn over, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with yarn over, k 2 tog. Knit 2 rows. INSTEP: Knit 15 sts, place these sts onto a st holder; knit 11 sts and leave on the needle; place the remaining 15 sts onto a 2nd st holder. Working on the 11 sts, knit 15 rows. Place the sts off the first st holder onto a free needle, tie yarn in; pick up and knit 9 sts along side of instep, knit 11 sts, pick up and knit 9 sts along 2nd side of instep, knit 15 sts off 2nd st holder (59 sts). Knit 3 rows. 1st dec: K 1, k 2 tog, k 19, k 2 tog, k 11, k 2 tog, k 19, k 2 tog, k 1. Knit 3 rows. 2nd dec: K 1, k 2 tog, k 17, k 2 tog, k 11, k 2 tog, k 17, k 2 tog, k 1. Knit 4 rows. Bind off all sts. Sew sole and back of bootie. Trim with ribbon.

Bonnet: Using the pink yarn, cast on 77 sts and knit 7 rows. Next row: Knit across increasing 6 sts evenly spaced apart (83 sts). Now work in the pattern, beginning and ending row with k 5. Work until the piece measures 5 inches in all, ending with the 6th row of the pattern completed. Break off white yarn. 1st dec: * K 10 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with k 11. Knit 1 row. 2nd dec: * k 9 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row, ending with k 2 tog. Knit 1 row. 3rd dec: * k 8 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 4th dec: * k 7 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 5th dec: * k 6 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 6th dec: * k 5 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 7th dec: * k 4 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 8th dec: * k 3 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 9th dec: * k 2 sts, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. 10th dec: * k 1 st, k 2 tog; repeat from * across row. Knit 1 row. Last dec: Knit 2 sts together across row. Break yarn leaving 9-inches. Sew up the garter st part.

NECK BAND: Using the pink yarn and with the right side of the work facing you, pick up and knit 64 sts around the neck edge. Knit 6 rows. Bind off all sts on the next row.
