Free Knitting Patterns - Baby Girls Dress
Age: 9 - 12 months
Measurements: To fit 19 1/2 - 20 inch chest. Length
from top of shoulder 14 1/2". Sleeve seam 1 1/2".
Gauge: 8 sts and 10 rows = 1" with No. 10 needles
in stocking stitch.
Materials: Beehive Baby Wool, 4 (1 oz. balls); Two No.
11 an two No. 10 knitting needles; 4 buttons; 1 1/2 yards ribbon.
Front: With No. 10 needles cast on 145 stitches.
Knit 7 rows in garter st. (plain knitting every row).
Pattern:
1st row: K 3, * K 2 tog, k 3, wl.fwd = (wool "yarn"
forward), k 1, wl.fwd, k 3, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 5. Repeat from * across row,
ending last repeat with k 3 so that both edges of work will match.
2nd row: K 1, p 6, * k 3, p 13. Repeat form * to last 10 sts.
K 3, p 6, k 1.
3rd row: K 3, * k 2 tog, k 2, wl.fwd, k 3, wl.fwd, k 2, sl 1,
k 1, psso, k 5. Repeat from * across row, ending with k 3.
4th row: K 1, p 5, * k 5, p 11. Repeat from * to last 11 sts,
k 5, p 5, k 1.
5th row: K 3, * k 2 tog, k 1, wl.fwd, k 5, wl.fwd, k 1, sl 1,
k 1, pssso, k 5. Repeat from * across row, ending with k3.
6th row: K 1, p 4, * k 7, p 9. Repeat from * to last 12 sts, k
7, p 4, k 1.
7th row: K 3, * k 2 tog, wl.fwd, k 7, wl.fwd, sl 1, k 1, psso,
k 5. Repeat from * across row, ending with k 3.
8th row: K 1, p 3, * k 9, p 7. Repeat from * to last 13 sts, k
9, p 3, k 1.
These 8 rows complete 1 pattern. Continue even in pattern
until work measures approximately 9 inches from beginning, or desired length;
ending with 8th pattern row.
Change to No. 11 needles.
Bodice: 1st row - K 1, * (k 2 tog) 3 times, K 3 tog.
Repeat from * to last 9 sts, (K 2 tog) 4 times, k 1. (66 sts. on needle). Knit
3 rows garter stitch.
5th row: (eyelets for ribbon). * K 1, wl.fwd, k 2 tog. Repeat
from * to end of row. K 3 rows garter stitch.
9th row: K 4, * inc. 1 st in next st, k 7. Repeat from * to
last 6 sts, inc 1 st in next st, k 5. (74 sts on needle). Beginning with purl
row, continue even in stocking st until bodice measures 1 1/2 inches, ending
with purl row.
Shape Armholes: Cast off 4 sts beginning next 2 rows.
(66 sts on needle). Continue eve until bodice measures 4 1/4 inches ending with
purl row.
Shape Neck: K 21, k 2 tog. Leave remaining sts on st
holder, Turn. Working on these 22 sts continue in stocking st, dec 1 st at nech
edge every row to 18 sts on needle. Continue even in stocking st until armhole
measures 4 inches from first shaping. Bodice should measure 5 1/2 inches in all.
Shape Shoulder: At armhole edge, cast off 9 sts every
alternate row twice. Leaving center 20 sts on st holder, with right side of work
facing, join wool to remaining sts and work other side to correspond.
Back: With No. 10 needles cast on 145 sts and work
exactly as given for front until sts are cast off for armholes. (66 sts on
needle).
Back Opening: 1st row - K 36. Leave remaining 30 sts on
st holder, turn.
2nd row: K 6 for garter st border. Purl to last st, k 1.
Keeping 6 sts in garter st at back opening, continue even in stocking st for 6
more rows.
9th row: Knit to last 4 sts. (wl.fwd, k 2 tog, for button
hole), k 2. Working 2 more buttonholes in garter st border with 9 rows between,
continue even until 9 rows have been worked above 3rd buttonhole, ending with
purl row. Shape neck and shoulder as given for front.
With right side of work facing, join wool to remaining 0 sts.
Cast on 6 sts. (36 sts on needle). Keeping 6 sts in garter st at back opening,
and omitting buttonholes, continue even in stocking st until there are the same
number of rows in garter st borders, ending at back opening.
Next row: K 5, ( k 2 tog, k 2) twice for neck and leave these
11 sts on st holder, k 2 tog, k 21. Working on remaining 22 sts, continue to
correspond to other side.
Neckband: Sew shoulder seams. With right side of work facing,
slip sts of left back onto No. 11 needle. Join wool and pick up and knit 18 sts
along side of neck. Working across 20 sts at front of neck, k 3, (k 2 tog, k 2)
3 times, k 2 tog, k 3. Pick up and knit 18 sts along other side of neck. Working
across sts of rights back, ( k 2, k 2 tog) twice, k 1, (wl.fwd, k 2 tog, for 4th
buttonhole), k 2.
Knit 3 rows garter st, cast off.
Sleeves: With No. 11 needles, cast on 36 sts.
Knit 7 rows garter st.
8th row: K 3, inc 1 st in each of next 30 sts, k 3. (66 sts on
needle). Beginning with purl row, continue even in stocking st until sleeve
measures 1 1/2 inches from beginning, ending with purl row.
Shape Cap: Cast off 2 sts beginning next 2 rows, then
dec 1 st each end of needle on next and every alternate row to 28 sts on needle.
Next row: (P 2 tog) 14 times. Cast off.
To Make Up: Sew side and sleeve seams. Sew in sleeves.
Sew the 6 cast on sts in position on wrong side of back opening. Press lightly.
Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes. Thread ribbon through eyelets at
waist.
