Free Knitting Patterns - Twist Mittens

Materials: These attractive adult mittens knit in the twist stitch can be made in three sizes by altering the needle size-small-size 3, medium-size 4, and large-size 5. You will need 2 ounces of knitting worsted in any desired color and a tapestry needle for sewing.

Abbreviations: k (knit) sk (skip) p (purl) sl (slip) sts (stitches) inc (increase)

Cast on 40 sts.

Cuff: Work in ribbing of k 2, p 2 for 3 inches.

Mitten:

Row 1: * Sk first st, k second st, k sk st, sl both sts from needle at same time, p 2, repeat from * across 20 sts (back), k 20 sts (front).

Row 2: P 20 sts, * k 2, p 2, repeat from * across.

Row 3: K 2, p 2 for 20 sts, k 20 sts.

Row 4: Repeat row 2.

Thumb Gusset:

Row 1: * Sk first st, k second st, k sk st, sl both sts from needle at same time, p 2, repeat from * across 20 sts, pick up 1 st in row below (beginning of thumb gusset), k remaining sts.

Row 2: P 21 sts, * k 2, p 2, repeat from * across.

Row 3: K 2, p 2 for 20 sts, inc 1 st in next st, k remaining sts.

Row 4: P 22 sts, * k 2, p 2, repeat from * across.

Row 5: * Sk first st, k second st, k sk st, sl both sts from needle at same time, p 2, repeat from * across for 20 sts, inc 1 st in each of next 2 sts, k remaining sts.

Row 6: P 24 sts, * k 2, p 2, repeat from * across.

Row 7: K 2, p 2 for 20 sts, inc 1 st in thumb gusset, k 2 sts, inc 1 st, k 20 sts.

Row 8: P 26, * k 2, p 2, repeat from * across row.

Continue in pattern and thumb incs. until there are 14 sts in gusset. Place all other sts on stitch holders.

On 14 sts of thumb gusset, work in stockinette st (k 1 row, p 1 row) for 14 rows.

Decrease thumb tip: * K 2 tog, k 1, repeat from * across 14 sts.

Next Row: P across.

Next Row: * K 1, k 2 tog, repeat from * across.

Fasten off yarn leaving a 10-inch length. Run threaded needle through remaining sts, draw up tightly and fasten securely. Sew thumb on wrong side. Turn, place sts back on needles, join yarn at base of last st on right hand needle. Continue in pattern until there are 13 1/2 patterns from top of ribbing. Decrease tip as follows: * K 2 tog, k 1, repeat from * across row.

Next Row: P across.

Next Row: * K 2 tog, k 1, repeat from * across.

Next Row: P across.

Next Row: K 2 tog across. Fasten off and finish as for thumb.

Make a second mitten in reverse.
