Free Knitting Patterns - Infant Hooded Cape

This lovely cape is done in simple stocking stitch in color of choice and striped with
pattern in white. Note: You may use colors of choice. All white would make a
lovely Christening cape. There are 3 buttons at neckline.
Materials: 5 balls of baby knit yarn in main color and 2 balls in
contrast color; 1 pair each of Nos. 8 and 10 knitting needles; 3 buttons; 1 yd.
of 1 inch facing ribbon; 1 yd. of narrow ribbon for neck tie.
Tension: 6 1/4 sts. and 8 rows = 1" on No. 8 needles.
Measurement: Length from Neck: 21 1/2". All around lower edge =
42".
Abbreviations: p.u.k. = (pick up loop lying before); y.r.n. = (yarn
around needle); y.o.n. = (yarn over needle)
TO MAKE
With No. 8 needles and main color, cast on 278 sts. and p. 5
rows. Change to No. 10 needles and contrast color.
1st row: (wrong side) P.
2nd row: K.1, then k.2 tog., to last st., k.1.
3rd row: K.1, * p.u.k. winding yarn
twice round needle, k.1 winding yarn twice round needle, rep. from * to last st.
k. 1. Note: Do not work into thread before last st.
4th row: K. dropping extra loops.
Change to No. 8 needles and main color.
5th row: P.
6th row: P.4, k. to last 4 sts.,
p.4.
7th to 18th rows: Rep. 5th and 6th
rows 6 times. Change to No. 10 needles and contrast. These 18 rows form the
pattern. Rep. them once more then rows 1 to 17 again.
Next row: P.4, k.2, (k.2
tog., k.1o, k.2 tog.) 19 times, k.2, p.4. Work 35 rows of pattern on these sts.
Next row: P.4, k.2, (k.2 tog., k.8, k.2 tog.) 19
times, k.2, p.4. Work 35 rows of patt. on these sts.
Next row: P.4, k.2, (k.2 tog., k.6, k.2 tog.) 19
times, k.2, p.4. Work 17 rows of patt. on these sts.
Next row: P.4, k.1, (k.2
tog., k.4, k.2 tog.) 19 times, k.1, p.4. Work 5 rows of patt. on these sts.
Cont. in k.2, p.2 rib keeping garter st. borders. Make buttonhole in 4th row as
follows: Work to last 4 sts., y.r.n., p.2 tog., p.2. Work 8 rows in rib with
garter st. borders.
Next row: P.4, (k.2, p.2
tog.) to last 6 sts., k.2, p.4.
Next row: P.4, (p.2, k.1) to last 6 sts., p.2, y.r.n.,
p.2 tog., p.2. Work 6 more rows with center sts. in k.2, p.1 rib.
Next row: P.4, (k.2 tog., p.1) to last 6 sts., k.2
tog., p.4. Change to No. 10 needles and work 2 rows with center sts. in p.1, k.1
rib. Make a buttonhole on next row then work 6 more rows.
Next row: P.4, (y.o.n., k.2 tog., k1i, y. fwd.,
k.2 tog., p.1) 10 times, p.3. Work 3 more rows with center sts. in rib as before
but inc. 1 st. in center of last row
Next row: Cast off 8, k.7, (including st. on needle),
(inc. into next st., k.2) 6 times, inc. into next st., turn. Change to No. 8
needles and work on these sts. for one side of hood.
1st row: P.
2nd row: P.4, k. to end. Rep. these 2 rows once.
* Now beg. with 1st row, work in patt. as for main part but with border at front
edge only. Inc. 1 st. at other edge on 2nd and 11th rows of each st.st. band
until 36 rows have been worked from *. Work 7 rows without further
shaping, then dec. 1 st. at shaped edge on alt. rows 3 times, then on every row
4 times. Cast off rem. sts. Rejoin yarn to rem. sts. at center.
1st row: (With right side
facing) inc. into 1st stitch, (k.2, inc. into next st.) 6 times, k.7, cast off 8
sts. Break yarn and rejoin at needle point. Complete to match first side of
hood, reversing border and shaping.
Finishing: Press lightly with a dry cloth and a warm iron. Face front
edges neatly with ribbon as far as base of yoke. Add buttons. Join back and top
seam of hood. Thread ribbon through holes at neck and tie in a bow.
