Free Knitting Patterns - Popcorn Baby Jacket

 

Measurements: To fit 19" chest. Length at center back 10 1/2". Sleeve seam 6".

Materials: 3 balls baby Yarn; Two # 12 and two #8 knitting needles; 1 #1 steel crochet hook; 3 buttons; 4 yards of ribbon (for all 3 pieces of this popcorn set).

Tension: 9 sts and 11 rows= 1" with #12 needles in stocking st.

Important:

Age, Weight and Chest Measurements:

6 mos. = 16 lbs. = 19" chest

9 mos. = 19 lbs. = 19 1/2" chest

12 mos. = 20 lbs. = 20 " chest

Popcorn Pattern:

1st row: (wrong side facing). K 1. * P2tog. Knit into front of next st as usual but leave it on left hand needle. Bring wool to front of work and purl into front of same st but still leave it on left hand needle. Take wool to back of work and knit into front of same st again. Slip st off left hand needle. (This increases 2 sts in 1 st to make up for the 2 sts decreased by the P3tog. The working of a st in this manner will be termed "(k 1, p 1, k 1) in next st " throughout). Repeat from * to last st. k1.

2nd Row: (right side facing): K1. Purl to last st.

3rd Row: K1. * (k1,p1,k1) in next st. P 3 tog., Repeat from * to last st. K 1.

4th row: K 1. Purl to last st. K 1. These 4 rows complete one pattern. When working the 2nd and 4th rows, purl the sts, so they will move easily on right hand needle. This will keep the Popcorns soft and puffy.

BACK: With No. 8 needles cast on 94 sts.

Work 6", even in pattern, ending with 3rd pattern row. Break wool. Leave these sts. on a thread.

SLEEVES: With No. 12 needles cast on 33 sts.

1st row: K1. *P1. K1. Repeat from * to end of row. Repeat this row for Moss st. for 9 rows in all.

10th row: K1. P1. *Inc. 1.st. in next st. purlways. Repeat from * to last 2 sts. P1. K1. (62 sts. on needle). Change to No. 8 needles.

llth row: K1. Purl to last st. K1.

Beginning with 1st. pattern row, continue even in pattern until sleeve measures 6 ins, from cast-on edge, ending with 3rd pattern row. Break wool. Leave these sts. on a thread.

FRONTS: With No. 8 needles cast on 62 sts. and work 6 ins, even in pattern, ending with 3rd pattern row. Break wool. Leave sts. of 1st. piece (Left Front) on a thread. When 2nd piece (Right Front) is completed, do not break wool, but proceed:

Next row: K1. Purl to last 2 sts. of Right Front. P2tog. Working across sts. of one sleeve, P2tog. Purl to last 2 sts. P2tog. Working across sts. of Back, P2tog. Purl to last 2 sts. P2tog. Working across sts. of other sleeve, P2tog. Purl to last 2 sts. P2tog. Working across sts. of Left Front, P2tog. Purl to last st. K1. (334 sts. on needle).

Beginning with 1st. pattern row, work 2 1/2 ins, in pattern, ending with 4th pattern row.

Change to No. 12 needles.

Next row: K1. * P3tog. K1. Repeat from * to last 5 sts. P3tog. K2tog. (167 sts. on needle).

To make Yoke:

1st row: K1. P1. Cast off 2 sts. for buttonhole. Moss to end of row.

2nd row: Moss to last 2 sts. Cast on 2 sts. P1. K1. Work 2 rows Moss st.

5th row: (K1. P1) 5 times. K1. * P3tog. (K1. P1)8 times. K1. Repeat from * to last 16 sts. P3tog. (K1. P1)6 times. K1. Work 5 rows Moss st.

11th row: (K1. P1) 5 times. K1. * P3tog. (K1. P1)7 times. K1. Repeat from * to last 14 sts. P3tog. (K1. P1)5 times. K1. Work 3 rows Moss St.

15th and 16th rows: As 1st. and 2nd rows.

17th row: (K1. P1)4 times. K1. *P3tog. (K1. P1)6 times. K1. Repeat from * to last 14 sts. P3tog. (K1. P1)5 times. K1. Work 5 rows Moss st.

23rd row: (K1. P1)4 times. K1. * P3tog. (K1. P1)5 times. K1. Repeat from * to last 12 sts. P3tog. (K1. P1)4 times. K1. Work 3 rows Moss st.

27th row: (K1. P1)3 times. K1. * P3tog. (K1. P1)4 times. K1 Repeat from * to end of row. Work 1 row even.

29th and 30th rows: As 1st. and 2nd rows.

31st row: (K1. P1)3 times. K1. * P3tog. (K1. P1) 3 times. K1 Repeat from * to end of row. (71 sts. on needle).

Work 1 row even. Cast off loosely in Moss st. but do not break wool.

To crochet picot edge: Sew side and sleeve seams. With right side of work facing and working along left front edge, work 1 sc in 1st knot formed by st knitted at beginning and end of each row. * Ch 3, 1 sc in 1st. Ch. for picot. Miss 1 knot. 1 sc in each of next 2 knots. Repeat from * to end of yoke. When working picot edge around popcorn portion, in order to keep edge uniform, do not miss knot under picot. When working picot edge around castoff edge of neck, miss 1 st under picot and draw work in slightly to give neck a neat fit. Fasten off. Work picot edge around cast-on edge of sleeves. Sew buttons to correspond to buttonholes.
