Free Knitting Patterns - Baby Bunting

Materials: Bernat Nylo or similar yarn, 7 (2 ounce skeins); 1 pair straight knitting needles Nos. 3 and 6 or size which will give the gauge given below and stitch holder. 1 lightweight separating zipper (16") in length; 1 1/2 yds. ribbon (white).

Gauge: 5 sts = 1"; 7 rows = 1".

Pattern Stitch: Multiples of 6 st plus 3.

Row 1: K 1, * P 1, K 1, repeat from * across row.

Row 2: K 3, * P 3, K 3, repeat from * across row.

Repeat these 2 rows for pattern stitch.

Bunting: Using No. 6 needles, cast on 153 sts. Work even in pattern st for 24 inches, ending with Row 1. 

First Decrease (Dec) Row: K 3 tog., * P 3, K 3 tog, repeat from * across row. (101 sts) 

Then work as follows:

Row 1: P 2, * K 1, P 3, repeat from * ending k 1, p 2,. 

Row 2: K 1, * p 3, k 1, repeat from * across row. Repeat these 2 rows until piece measures 26 inches, ending with Row 1. 

Second Dec Row:  K 1, * p 1, p 2 tog, k 1, repeat from * across row. (76 sts)

Beading: P 1, * k 1, y o, p 2 tog, repeat from * across row. On the next row, * k 1, p 1, repeat from * ending k 2 tog. (75 sts)

Hood: Starting with Row 2 of pattern st, work even for 5 inches.

Shape Top: Continuing in pattern st, at the beg of each of the next 2 rows bind off 24 sts. Work even on center 27 sts for 4 inches, ending with Row 1. Sl these sts on a holder. Sew side edges of top to bound off edges.

Border: Using No. 3 needles, with right side facing you and starting 1 rows above beading pick up 38 sts on side edge of hood, k across 27 sts of top, pick up 38 sts on other side of hood. K 1, p 1, in ribbing on 103 sts for 1 3/4 inches. Bind off in ribbing.

Finishing: Front Borders; Using No. 3 needles, with right side facing you, pick up 200 sts on right front edge, k 1, p 1, in ribbing for 1 3/4 inches. Bind off. Work left front border to correspond. Starting at lower edge, sew front borders together for 10 inches. Tack font borders to hood borders, forming 2 eyelets on each side. Block. Sew in zipper. Seam bottom. Run ribbon through beading. Turn back hood border.
