Free Knitting Pattern - Toddler's Poncho and Pants

Materials: Poncho - 2 balls of Baby yarn in
White, 3 balls in pink and 2 balls of blue; Pants: 4 balls of blue for
pants only; a pair each of Nos. 9, 10, and 11 knitting needles; a set of 4
double pointed needles Nos. 9 and 10; Elastic for waist. Note: Colors of
choice may be used.
Tension: 7 sts. = 1 inch over st.st.,
and 6 sts. = 1 inch over pattern on No. 9 needles.
Measurements: Poncho: Center front
seam: 15 ins.; Pants: Waist
to crutch: 8 1/2 ins.; Inside leg seam: 10 1/4 ins., with ribbing turned up.
Poncho: With No. 9 needles and white, cast on 191
sts.
1st row: (wrong side) P.
2nd row: K.1, sl.1, k.1, p.s.s.o.,
p. to last 3 sts., k.2 tog., k.1. Rep. 1st and 2nd rows twice. Change to pink.
7th row: P.
8th row: K.1, sl.1, k.2 tog., p.s.s.o., * y.fwd., k.3, y.fwd., sl.1, k.2 tog., p.s.s.o., rep.
from * to last 7 sts., y.fwd., k.3, y.fwd., k.3 tog., k.1.
9th row and 11th row: P.
10th row: K.1, sl.1, k.1, p.s.s.o., *
y.fwd., sl.1, k.2 tog., p.s.s.o., y.fwd., k.3, rep. from * to last 6
sts., y.fwd., sl.1, k.2 tog., p.s.s.o., y.fwd., k.2 tog., k.1.
12th row: K.1, sl.1, k.1, p.s.s.o., k.2 * y.fwd., sl.1, k.2 tog., p.s.s.o., y.fwd., k.3, rep.
from * to last 8 sts., y.fwd., sl.1, k.2 tog., p.s.s.o., y.fwd., k.2, k.2
tog., k.1.
13th to 18th rows: As rows 7 to 12.
Change to white. Rep. these 18 rows but use blue and pink in turn for 12 rows of
lace patt., until 5 patts. and 6 rows of 6th patt. have been worked. Change
to No.10 needles and cont. to 18th row of 7th patt.
Next row: Still with pink, (p.2
tog., p.2) 15 times, p.2 tog., p.1, p.2 tog. Leave these sts. on a spare needle
and make another piece to match. Now arrange all the sts. from both pieces on
three No. 10 needles, and with right side facing, and still with pink, knit 1
round and then work in k.2, p.2 rib for 1 1/2 ins. Change to set of No. 9
needles and work a further 2 1/2 ins Cast off loosely in rib. Press lightly and
join seams very neatly.
Pants: Right Leg
With No. 11 needles and blue, cast on 81 sts. and work 14 rows
in k.1, p.1 rib. Change to No. 9 needles and work 1 more row in rib. Purl 1 row
then shape as follows:
1st row: K.10, turn.
2nd and every wrong side row: Sl. 1, p. to end.
3rd row: K 18, turn.
5th row: K 26, turn.
7th row: K 34, turn.
9th row: K 42, turn
10th row: Sl 1, p 41. Cont. in st.st. and inc. 1 st. at
longer edge on following 7th and every following 8th row until there are 87 sts.
Cont. without further shaping until short edge measures 9 ins. ending with a p.
row.
Shape leg: Cast off 3 sts. at beg. of next 2 rows, then
dec. 1 st. at each end of next 5 rows. Now dec. 1 st. at each end of next 3 k.
rows and then at each end of every following 4th row 3 times. Cont. without
further shaping until leg measures 8 1/2 ins. ending with a p. row. Change to
No. 11 needles. Next row: (K 2 tog., k 2) 14 times, k 2 tog, k 1. Now work 3 1/2
ins. in k 2, p 2, rib. Cast off loosely in rib. Work left leg to match reversing
all shapings.
Finishing: Press pieces lightly on wrong side. Join
front and back seams. Join inside leg seam using flat seam for ribbing. Turn
waist ribbing in half to wrong side and catch down. Insert elastic. Turn up
ankle ribbing. Press seams.
