Free Knitting Patterns - Diamond Pattern Shawl
To knit this shawl, use about 12 ounces 4-ply worsted weight yarn, number 11
circular needle (29") to accommodate large number of stitches, markers and
size F crochet hook.
Abbreviations:
k (knit) p (purl)
0 (yarn over) sl (slip)
St (stitch) psso (pass slip stitch over)
inc (increase) tog (together)
sc (single crochet) ch (chain)
sk (skip)
Gauge: 4 sts equal 1 inch, 5 rows
equal 1 inch

below is determined once you reach the pattern insert point on the shawl. Begin
this project with the "Shawl Instructions" below, then incorporate the
pattern where instructed. Knit loosely. Shawl is worked from neck
down.
Pattern:
Note: This pattern should be practiced many
times before starting shawl. For practice
purposes, you may cast on 36 stitches or however many you chose.
Row 1: (Wrong side) P.
Row 2: K 1, inc in same st, k 1, * 0, sl
1, k 2 tog, psso, 0, k 7, repeat from * across, end with inc in last st before
marker. (End all even pattern rows in this manner.)
Row 3: (And all uneven rows) P.
Row 4: K 1, inc in same st, * k 2 tog, 0, k 3,
0, sl 1, K 1, psso, k 3, repeat from* across.
Row 6: K 1, inc in same st, * k 2 tog, 0, k 5,
0, sl 1, k 1, psso, k 1, repeat from* across.
Row 8: K 1, inc in same st, k 2 tog, * 0, k 7,
0, sl 1, k 2 tog, psso, repeat from * across.
Row 10: K 1, inc in same st, k 3, * 0, sl
1, k 1, psso, k 3, k 2 tog, 0, k 3, repeat from* across.
Row 12: K 1, inc in same st, * k 5, 0, sl 1, k
1, psso, k 1, k 2 tog, 0, repeat from* across.
Repeat 12 pattern rows once more, then rows 1
and 2 of pattern.
Shawl: Loosely cast on 32
sts.
Row 1: (And all uneven rows) P.
Row 2: K 2, place marker, k 28, place marker,
k 2.
Row 4: Inc in each of first 2 sts, sl marker,
inc in next st, k 26, inc in next st, sl marker, inc in each of last 2 sts.
Row 6: Inc in first st, * k to within 1 st
before marker, inc in this st, sl marker, inc in next st, repeat from * once, k
to end, inc in NEXT to last st— 44sts.
Continue rows 1 through 6 for 7 inches.
Work 6 rows garter st (k each row). Continuing
to inc as established, k 1¾ inches in stockinette (k 1 row, p 1 row).
Start pattern, inc as established. (Start new
pattern at each section after incs.) When pattern is completed, k 1 3/4 inches in
stockinette.
Work 6 rows garter st.
Work 2 inches stockinette.
Work 10 rows garter st. Bind off.
Work row of sc around neck and each front
edge. Turn, * ch 3, sk 1 ch, sl st in next ch. Repeat from * around each front
edge and neck.
Fringe: Cut fringe over 8-inch card. Using
three strands, tie through every 3rd st across lower edge. If desired, double
tie.
