Free Knitting Patterns - Knit Shawl
To knit this shawl, materials needed are about
18 ounces (color of choice) 3-ply yarn, 1 pair 14 inch, size 10 knitting needles,
size I crochet hook. An interesting leaf pattern trims the border of this shawl.

(yarn over) sl (slip) PSS0 (pass slip stitch over)

Gauge: 3 sts equal one inch.
Cast on 150 sts for neck edge. P 1 row.
Short Rows—Row 1: (Right Side) K 148 sts,
leaving 2 sts unworked on left needle.
Row 2: Turn, sl 1 as to p, p 145, leave 2 sts
on left needle.
Row 3: Turn, sl 1 as to p, k 143, leave remaining sts on left
needle.
Row 4: Turn, sl 1 as to p, p 141, leave remaining sts on left
needle.
Continue in this manner, working 2 sts less every row until 2
sts remain, end on wrong side with p row.

75 sts from holder to needle. From right side, join yarn at neck edge.
Row 1: (Right Side) * K 2, inc 1 st as before.
Repeat from *, end inc 1 st in last st. (113 sts). Complete to correspond to
first half of border.
Finishing: Sew edges
of border, beginning at center point. With crochet hook, from wrong side, work 1
row of sl st across neck edge only, keeping work flat. Steam very
lightly.
Fringe: Fringe is
worked from wrong side, along side edges only. Wind yarn around a 14 inch
cardboard; cut yarn at one end. Fold strands in half and knot 2 strands in every
2nd st along side edges. Beginning 1 inch below first knot, knot 2 strands of
first fringe and 2 strands of 2nd fringe together. Knot remaining 2 strands of
2nd fringe and 2 strands of 3rd fringe together. Continue along fringe in this
manner. Beginning 1 inch below 2nd row of knots, knot remaining 2 strands of
first fringe with 2 strands of 2nd fringe, knot 2 strands of 2nd fringe with 2
strands of 3rd fringe. Continue in this manner across fringe. Trim evenly.
