Free Knitting Patterns - Baby Cardigan and Cap
Directions given are for size 6 months, changes for size 12
months are in parentheses.
Materials: are for about 3 ounces MC 3-ply Baby
Wintuk Yarn, 1 ounce CC, standard knitting needles, numbers 1 and 3, size B crochet hook and 6 buttons.
Abbreviations:

CC (contrasting color) tog (together)
Sl (slip) ch (chain)
sk (skip) sc (single crochet)
inc (Increase) dec (decrease)
Gauge: 7 sts equal 1 inch,, 10
rows equal 1 inch.
CABLE PATTERN: (Worked on 7 sts)—Row 1: P 2, sl 1 st, k 2, psso 2 k
sts, p 2.
Row 2: K 2, p 1,0, p 1, k 2.
Row 3: P 2, k 3, p2.
Row 4: K 2, p 3, k 2.
Repeat these 4 rows for pattern.
BACK: With number 1 needles and MC, cast on 70
(74) sts. K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 8 rows. Change to number 3 needles, work in
stockinette (k 1 row, p 1 row) until piece measures 7 (7 1/2) inches, end with
wrong side row.
Shape Raglan Armhole:
At the beginning of next 2 rows, bind off 2 sts.
Row 3: K 2, k 2 tog, work to last 4 sts, sl 1
st, k 1, psso, k 2.
Row 4: P. Repeat these 2 rows 17 (19) times. sl remaining 30 sts to holder.
Left Front: Using number 1 needles and MC,
cast on 36 (38) sts. K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 8 rows. Change to number 3 needles
and work as follows:
Row 1: K 29 (31) sts, work cable pattern over
next 7 sts.
Row 2: Work cable pattern, p to end of row.
Continue working as above until piece measures same as hack to underarm.
Shape Raglan Armhole: At beginning of
next row, bind off 2 sts.
Row 2: Work in established pattern.
Row 3: K 2, k 2 tog, work in established
pattern sts across row.
Repeat last 2 rows 9 (11) times. End with
wrong side row—24 sts.
Shape Neck: K 2, k 2 tog, work to last 10 sts and sl these 10 sts to holder.
Continue to dec 1 st at arm edge every other row in same manner as before 7
times. At the same time, dec 1 st at neck edge every other row 6 times. Fasten
off.
Right Front: Work to correspond to left front, reversing placing of cable strip
and all shaping.
Armhole: Work to
last 4 sts, sl 1 st, k 1, psso, k 2.
Sleeves: Using number 1 needles and MC, cast
on 37 (39) sts. K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 8 rows. Change to number 3 needles and
work as follows:—Row 1: k 15 (16), work cable pattern on next 7 sts, k 15 (16)
sts. Continue to work as above, inc 1 st at each end of needle every 3/4 inch
6 (7) times—49 (53) sts. Work even until entire piece measures 6½ (7½)
inches. End with wrong side row.
Shape Raglan Armhole Cap: At
beginning of next 2 rows, bind off 2 sts. Dec in same manner as on back, sl
remaining 9 sts to holder.
Finishing: Sew sleeves to back and front
armholes. Sew underarm seams.
Neckband: Using number 1
needles, pick up 81 sts around neck, including sts from holders. K 1, p 1 in
ribbing 7 rows. Bind off in ribbing.
Front Band:—Row 1: Beginning at lower right
front, work sc to neck edge (keeping work flat), ch 1, turn.
Row 2:—Buttonhole: Sc in each of first 2 sts, ch 1, sk 1 st, make 5 more buttonholes evenly spaced, make last one 2 sts
above end of ribbing, ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in each at and under each ch. Fasten
off.
Left Front Band: Work same as right front
band, omitting buttonholes. Block to size. Sew on buttons. With CC, make ch to
fit around first row of neck ribbing. Sew in place.
Cap: Using nuber 1 needles and
MC, cast on 79 (83) sts. K1, p1 in ribbing for 7 rows. Change to number 3
needles and work as follows:
Row 1: K 29 (31) sts, work next 7 sts in cable
pattern, k 7 sts, work next 7 sts in cable pattern, k 29 (31) sts.
Continue to work center 21 sts in cable pattern and stockinette as above;
remaining sts in stockinette until piece measures 4 1/4 (4 1/2) inches.
End with wrong side row.
Shape Back: At beginning of next row, bind off
26 (26) sts. At beginning of following row, bind off 25 (26) sts.
Continue in pattern st on remaining 28 (31)
sts, dec 1 st at each end of needle every 3/4 inch 3 times. Work even
until piece is long enough to fit bound off edges. Bind off.
Finishing: Sew seams.
Neckband: Using number 1 needles, right side
facing, pick up 80 (84) sts on neck edge. K 1, p 1 in ribbing for 3 rows.
Beading: * K 1, p 1, k2 sts
tog, repeat from * across. Work 3 more rows in ribbing. Bind off in ribbing.
Chain: Using two strands of MC, make a ch 28
inches long. Fasten off. Turn back cuff of cap and run through beading. Finish
each end of ch with pompon of CC. Sc across first row of ribbing on cap, ch 1,
turn. Sc in first st, * ch 4,
sk 3 sts, sc in next st, repeat from * across, end with 1 sc. Fasten
off.
