Free Knitting Patterns - Knit Tea Cozy

Materials: A felt tea blossom and leaves decorate this easy-knit cozy. Put one on your tea pot to keep the last cup of tea as piping hot as the first. We suggest using Coats & Clarks’ Red Heart Knitting Worsted, 4 ply. One 2-ounce skein in any desired color is sufficient to make a cozy. Use plastic knitting needles number 6. A small piece each of white and dark green felt will be needed for trim.

Abbreviations: sts (stitches) k (knit) dec (decrease)

Gauge: 9 sts make 2 inches; 8 rows make 1 inch

Pattern:

Side Piece (Make 2)—Starting at edge, cast on 34 sts. Work in garter st (k each row) until piece measures 4˝ inches. Dec 1 st at the beginning of next 10 rows. Dec 1 st at both ends of every row until 16 sts remain. Bind off 3 sts at beginning of next 2 rows. Bind off.

Press pieces through a damp cloth. Sew top edges neatly together to the first decreased row. Leaving a 3-inch opening at both sides, sew lower edge of side seams together.

Tea Flower and Leaves—Following patterns below, cut

5 white felt petals, 1 white calyx and 6 green leaves. Gather lower edge of each petal, having the side edge of one petal slightly overlap the adjacent side edge of next petal and the 5th petal joined to the first petal. Sew gathered edges of petals on top of the calyx.

Stamens: Make several 1" loops of yarn and sew to center of calyx. Sew flower at top of tea cozy as shown in photo. Sew tip of each leaf around the flower under the petals.
