A toe up sock with a twin leaf panel and
Leap Frogging to help you avoid second Sock Syndrome
For the intermediate knitter
Necessary Facts
This pattern generally fits a med (lg)
woman’s foot. • Needles One set of # 1 (or 1.5) & 2 sets of
#2, double pointed (dpn) • Gauge 8
sts/inch, 9-10 rows/inch • Notions waste yarn, optional crochet
hook, 2
row counters, embroidery needle • Yarn
Approx 4 ounces of Spinning Bunny sock-weight superwash merino/
tencel yarn in Roses for You - 330 (390)
yards. Divide into approx 2 equal balls.
Ultimate Diagonal Toe
Shape Toe
Rw 1: (RS) K29(34) sts. Turn.
Rw 2: (WS) Slip 1, P28(33) sts, Turn.
Rw 3: (RS) Slip 1, K27(32)sts, pm. Turn.
Rw 4: (WS) Slip 1, P26(31)sts, pm. Turn.
Rw 5: (RS) Slip 1, K25(30)sts, pm. Turn.
Continue in this pattern until: (WS) Slip
1, p10(15)sts, pm. Turn.
Turn Toe
Note: sskWSL means: Slip the
next st knitwise, insert needle into loop at base of next st. K the 2 tog,
through the back loop. P2togWSL means: Slip the next st purlwise,
insert needle into loop at base of next st. P the 2 tog.
Rw 1: (RS) Slip 1, K8(13)sts, sskWSL Turn.
Remove markers as you come to them.
Rw 2: (WS) Slip 1, p7(12) sts. p2togWSL
Turn.
Rw 3: (RS) Slip 1, k8(13)sts. sskWSL. Turn.
Rw 4:(WS) Slip 1, p9(14) sts, p2togWSL.
Turn.
Rw 5: (RS) Slip 1, k10(15)sts, sskWSL.
Turn.
Rw 6:(WS) Slip 1, p11(16) sts, p2togWSL.
Turn
Continue in this fashion with: (RS)
knitting until 2sts before marker, sskWSL, Turn. (WS) purling until 2sts
before marker, p2togWSL. Turn.
until: Row 22:
(WS) slip 1, p27 (32), pick up loop from base of last st and ssk with last
st. Turn.
Foot
(Change to #2 needles for larger sizing) Knit
across half the sts [N3]. BOR. With a free needle, knit the second half of
sts [N1]- bottom of foot. With a free needle, pick up and knit 29(34) sts
from provisional cast on [N2 – top of foot]. Work sts on N3 to complete
round. BOR
Redistribute stitches as
follows.
N1: 15(17)sts –
knit even
N2: 28(34) sts
– Leaf Pattern Panel (see
Table 1 on page 3) - place marker after 3(6) sts and after 25(28) sts.

N3: 15(17) sts
– knit even. Continue working around until ~ 3 inches from needed total
foot length.
Leap
frog other sock through Foot.
A method to get through 2 socks at approx. the same time,
one at a time. Now go back and start the second sock. Bring it to the next
leap frog.
Shape
Gusset
Note: M1FB—Make one stitch by
knitting into the front of the st and then into the back of the st.
Round 1: (inc rnd)
N1: Knit to 2
sts from end, M1FB, k1.
N2: Work even in
leaf pattern
N3: K1, M1FB, k
to end of needle.
Round 2: work
around even, continuing pattern on N2.
Repeat Rounds 1 & 2, 11 times. = 80(90)sts
You are at BOR.
N1 : Knit without
making any inc.
N2: Work even in
leaf pattern
N3 : Knit 12(11)
sts.
4th needle and sts become N4 :
14(17)
Slip N3 :12(11) sts onto a holder.
Slip 12(11) sts from end of N1 onto st holder.
You now have: N1: 14(17); N2: 28(34); N3:
14(17) plus 2 st holders with 12(11) sts on each.
Short
Row Heel:
Note: Wrap means
On RS –
Bring the yarn to the front between the needles. Slip the next st to the
right needle as if to purl.
Take the yarn to the back between the needles. Wrapping is
complete.
On WS -
Bring the yarn to the
back between the needles. Slip the next st to the right needle as if to
purl.
Take the yarn to the front between the needles. Wrapping
is complete.
Slip N3 sts onto N1. 28(34) total sts
Continue on N1 only.
Rw 1: (RS) K26(32)tbl sts, wrap the next st. Turn
Rw 2: (WS) P24(30) sts, wrap the next st. Turn.
Rw 3: K22(28)tbl sts, wrap the next st. Turn.
Rw 4: P20(26) sts, wrap the next st. Turn.
Continue in this pattern until: K2(8) tbl sts, wrap the
next st. Turn.
Purl across to the last st and at the same time, pick up
wraps and purl tog with st. Purl last st tog with first st from the
gusset. Turn.
Knit across the row picking up wraps on the second half of
the row. Knit the last st tog with the first gusset st. Turn.
Slip 1 purlwise, then purl to last st. Purl the last st
tog with the next gusset st.
Heel Flap
With RS facing & N1, work back and
forth as follows :
Rw 1: *slip 1 purlwise, Knit to last st. K
last st together with next gusset st.
Rw 2: *slip 1 purlwise, Purl to last st.
Knit last st tog with next gusset st.
Repeat these 2 rows until all gusset sts
are worked.
Leap frog other sock to the leg.
Leg:
Redistribute stitches on needles, keeping the BOR in the
center of the heel.
N1: 15(17), N2: 28(34), N3: 15(17)
Finish knitting to BOR keeping in pattern on N2.
Work even continuing Leaf
Panel table until leg measures 4
-5 inches to floor. The length of the leg is really up to you.
Leg
Ribbing
On med. only ,
dec 2 sts before starting ribbing, (56sts)
K2, P2 around for 1.5 - 2 inches.
Finishing:
Stretchy Cast Off
Rw 1: *k2, p2,
cast on 1 st using back loop method.
Rw 2: Do a
regular cast off BUT do not knit or purl the cast on sts. Instead slip
each one purlwise and then cast it off as you would any other stitch.
Weave in ends and block.
Leap frog other sock to the end.
The End
You have now made 2 socks avoiding Second Sock Syndrome! |
